We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica J. Cortez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica J., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, I did not want to do it. I come from a background of entrepreneurs specifically in the restaurant industry and musicians industry. It is a lot of work and sacrifice. It was definitely not an atmosphere I wanted to raise my children in. But there was just so much more aching to come out of me as I sat behind the desk at my corporate position. I really didn’t care what it was going to take to pursue what it was I just knew corporate America was not for me.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One thing I truly believe sets us apart is we go to where the people are at even if it’s just one person. We serve coffee, tea and handcrafted medicinal teas. That being said we reach those who are sometimes sick or alone and unable to tend to things themselves. We’re like an on call natural pharmacy with special delivery available!
I would say I am most excited about touring the United States with our mobile Café trailer.
I’m most proud of all the beautiful testimonies I hear from our patrons. From medical to personal to spiritual. When those good reports come in they inspire and encourage us so much to keep going!
It has not always been easy to get where we are today. We’ve made mistakes along the way – tried things this way or that way & in the end our customers are the ones who are effected. The good thing is we truly have amazing customers turned family and friends who genuinely love and want to support us and see us succeed. That in itself is such an honor.
I would say the biggest lesson I have learned so far is to enjoy the moments we are in while we are in them and not be so quick to get to the final mark. Literally trust the process and enjoy the journey.
I pray the world would come to know the love of God through our business. Know about His goodness. That if God could turn my family’s life around the way He has He can do it for them too. That when they see Café Guadalupe they feel home & love. That Café Guadalupe brings the family together in their very own home.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s easy, I would take my best friend to the water. I truly enjoy Lavon Lake. The sunset is epic there.
As far as food goes – hands down best bbq ever is the Fire For The Lord bbq truck! It’s the best bbq I’ve ever had and I’m from Texas. Haha The food is great but the people are even better!
You cannot go wrong downtown! I mean it’s a bit overwhelming but you absolutely need to visit the site of JFK’s assassination. The aquarium absolutely is great too! A ride on the trolley and some art structures, we’d have lots to discuss.
Another place I would definitely put on the list is Mountain Creek Lake! It’s so beautiful there, serene!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All honor and glory goes to my Heavenly Father God because without Him I would not be here today. I could not function without Him. Every good idea is a God idea for sure. When people so kindly compliment my creativity I chuckle because those specific ideas literally came to me during my worship time with Him. He has since the beginning of me taking those steps of faith put people in my path to encourage me and help me along the way and there are too many to name just one. Every single person I encounter daily is highly valuable & blessing to me and my family.
