We had the good fortune of connecting with Miku Hirayama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miku, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I was a high school student, I recognized that pursuing an artistic career was the sole path that resonated with my life. It’s truly special for me to be able to express and tell stories what I feel in my own way.
Always moving forward honestly in the direction I feel is right, it’s an endless and irreplaceable journey.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I came to New York three years ago and experienced the way of various expression as the artist. Growing up with ballet, where 90% of my experiences involved interpreting the stories of performance pieces, understanding my character, and faithfully portraying it.
While technique and expressive capabilities are limitless in ballet, the sense was closer to delving into existing works and refining oneself rather than creating pieces from scratch. The emphasis was on exploring and honing within the established framework rather than starting entirely from zero.
Also English is not my first language, so hard to learn new things with not my language.
Navigating the open-ended nature of the creative process, starting from a blank canvas and shaping it with personal intent, presents a stark departure from following pre-drawn paths. Drawing your own tracks is a new endeavor altogether. Each dance becomes a moment of questioning whether it aligns with your artistic vision, creating a constant tension. But my commitment to research, dancing with various artists, and continuous experience contributes to my daily growth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s think if my family come to here. There are so many beautiful places I want to show them.
but I want them to visit my school and company in Manhattan.
This is my dream to invite them to see my performance with my company.
Also I want to invite them river side there we can see NJ view.
I always go there when I am happy sad. but the view makes me feel better.
And of course Central Park !!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my family and friends. Despite the distance and time difference between NY and Japan, I always feel their support and love. No matter how challenging the day or the things, I find strength knowing I can handle it because I have them. Their presence reminds me that I’m not alone, and I’m grateful for the meaningful encounters with people that contribute to my life.
