We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Mays and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, what matters most to you?
In both my work life and personal life I am a huge advocate for integrity. Integrity is more than a singular word it requires honesty, respect, trust, responsibility, and communication. In my field of work integrity will make or break my relationships with clients. I spend at least 15 minutes with every client new or returning discussing their hair goals and lifestyle and do everything in my power to achieve their dreams in their hair. However, there are times when I know that I have to be realistic and let them know that dream is not achievable ..for now. I will do my best to make sure they have the right at home care and we take the right steps to get where they want without damage. I truly believe that my open communication and honesty is what brings my clients back.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been in the hair industry for a little over 10 years now and it has been nothing short of a passion for me. I attended beauty school in my junior year and senior year of high school and completed my cosmetology program before I graduated high school. From there I went on to assist and dive deep into extended education at a salon in Orange County, CA and that’s when I found where my true passion was. I truly enjoy working with hair color and creating a clients hair goals and inspirations from lived in natural highlights to fun pops of pinks or blues.

I started to work on my own branding in early 2022. I wanted to set myself apart from being just another stylist and I want people to see who I am and what I offer when you’re in my chair. I originally had thought of rooted culture just because I wanted it to be about hair but when I really thought it over and who I am and my beliefs rooted culture goes beyond just hair. My favorite quote is ” the flower doesn’t think about the other flowers around them, it just grows.” and I implement that every day with my life and with my clients life. Your “roots” and your life doesn’t have to compare to anyone else you just grow and bloom into your best. The rest will follow.

I always say your hair is your crown and you should wear it proudly! I believe what sets me apart from others is how I work with my clients. When you sit in my chair my time and attention is 100% on you. I am always here to listen when life is hard or ugly and when life is exciting and evolving in great ways! I want you to be relaxed and feel extremely welcome when you’re with me and no matter if its your first time or 100th time visiting me you will always be greeted with a smile! I will laugh with you, cry with you, cheer you on and always be there for you when you need me whether that’s just a “hair-apy” appointment or an appointment to get your color ready for the next big steps in your life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great question!

If they were here for just the weekend I definitely make time to go to downtown McKinney with the charm that is there its hard not to enjoy a drink at the yard or good pizza at Cadillac pizza. On Sundays we always make a stop For brunch at ebb and flow in deep ellum or HG supply in lower Greenville. Im always on the hunt for great food with a beautiful aesthetic.

I also love to take people to Fort Worth stockyards ! Spending a whole day down there and taking them to billy bobs, watching the cattle drive, exploring the hotel where Bonnie and Clyde stayed, and eating some good BBQ is such an adventure!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! There are two people and I’m not sure if it matters where they are from but
First is Emily Myer from Albuquerque, NM. We met back in a salon in Colorado and she is my go to for help with hair questions and always sets me up for my best success.

Second, is mya (my boss) she’s truly a badass and let’s me be me in the salon. She’s always there to help if I need it and keeps me calm, cool, collected!
