We had the good fortune of connecting with Melvin Sweats Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melvin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Photography was always around me growing up with my father capturing all the family moments. I grew my own passion for photography when traveling with the navy. Once I got out of the military, I wanted to keep making memories with my camera and thought what better way than to create memories for others.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe what sets me apart is my drive and dedication for photography and videography. There is not a task that I believe is too big or not in my capacity. My work is very versatile. I do sports, weddings, portraits, parties, and real estate photography. I try not to limit myself and make sure I give my all in each and every photoshoot and videography, or whatever content I am creating. I am where I am professionally, because of my drive and determination. I let my work do my talking. I’ve grown over the past few years through word of mouth, social media marketing, networking and connecting with other creators like myself. Another way, is pouring my all and investing into my craft. Nothing comes easy without hard work. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is sacrifice. In order to get where you want to go, I have to let go and sacrifice things. For me, it has definitely been worth it, but sacrifice has definitely been my biggest lesson learned. I want the world to know that being a creator is one of my biggest passions. The drive I have is unmatched and there is nothing that I would not do to make my client happy with the work I provide and create for them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite spots in the city I love to visit. I love burgers so my favorite place to eat is Twisted Root, Walk On, and I love Top Golf and Putt Shack are great places to visit and hang out. These are my go to places, when it comes to food, drinks, and a good time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to recognize my late grandmother Christine Ward. She has been my motivation and reason for photography. She always enjoyed my photos . The good, the bad, and the ugly. Always told me I had a great eye for photography. She was very proud of my growth. So, when I’m tired and feel the need to slow down, I always revert back to her and how proud she was of me.
