We had the good fortune of connecting with Meghan Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meghan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I never actually thought about starting my very own business. I was a teacher for 15 years when I joined Mary Kay as a sales consultant for fun. As I worked my way up in that business, building a team and experiencing some success, my mind was opened to working for myself. I retired from teaching to pursue my Mary Kay business full time. When Covid shut the world down in the spring of 2020, I had to pivot away from in-person, party based sales and went back to work at the florist where I worked all through my college career. The owners of the shop, Rhonda and Charlie, were like family to me and they were the same age as my parents, who had recently retired. My husband and I became curious about their plans for retirement and so when I asked, they told me they were waiting for a young person who would be excited to continue running the shop as they had. Rhonda told me she was waiting for me. At that moment, we all sat down and formulated a plan for us to purchase the shop two years out. 6 months into us working and apprenticing under the owners, Charlie had a stroke and passed away. Even through the difficult time, we stuck to our 2 year purchase plan. Now, we are a year and a half in to owning the business and we love it! My husband and I are co-owners and run the business together, with him taking care of the books and with me heading up the creative design team.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are a locally owned and operated full-service florist with a professional design staff. We offer fresh arrangements for any occasion, house plants, gift items, and more. Bloomfield Floral has been serving the Denton area since 1985. My husband, Philip, and I purchased the shop in 2023 from Rhonda and Charles Wood. I have been affiliated with Bloomfield Floral since 1998 when Rhonda add me to her team of designers. We pride ourselves on using the freshest product, employing professional design staff and having stellar customer service. We care about our customers and go above and beyond to meet and exceed expectations and we strive to function at the highest level of professionalism. No part of running a business is easy but we will always run an honest business and keep our pricing transparent for our clients. We want anyone reading this to know that we truly care about you, your sentiment and creating the perfect florals to express your feelings.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denton is such a unique college town, there is always something fun going on! We would start with a walk around our historic Courthouse-On-The-Square, where you can visit the Courthouse museum, find most any book you could want at Recycled Books located in the historic Wright Opera House building and sample Beth Marie’s homemade ice cream. We can catch a show at the Campus Theater, sample our way through Denton’s craft beer district and listen to live music at one of our many iconic venues. And the festivals! Some of our most famous include Dog Days of Denton, The Denton Blues Festival, Denton’s Day of the Dead and The Denton Arts and Jazz Fest.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Rhonda Wood, the former owner of Bloomfield Floral, has been my biggest supporter, encourager and cheerleader through the entire process of purchasing and now running the shop. Not only did she give me my first job in 1998 when I came to town for college at 18, but she became the family I chose. She and Charlie rented a room to me while I was in school, attended my wedding and were godparents to my first child. Rhonda was my support system through the stressful purchasing process and I am still learning from her every day that we are together! I am so thankful she took a chance on me as a college freshman with no floral design experience.
