Meet Megan Burch | Photographer + Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Burch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My all time favorite quote is “fortune favors the bold”. This has been my favorite quote for years, even before I started the career I have now. To me, it’s a constant reminder that good things come to those that put themselves out there and go after what they want! Every time I think about it, it reminds me to shoot my shot with every opportunity and not hesitate to be bold or be scared to take chances.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The end of May will make it six years of shooting photos and videos, and I have been freelance full time for going on 2 and a half years! I specialize in music, event, portrait, and commercial/brand work although I have experience in various other areas as well! The journey here definitely wasn’t easy and took quite some time, but I love this creative world so much I was determined to be in this field full time.
It was a non stop hustle, but most definitely worth all the ups and downs it took to get to the point I’m grateful enough to be at now. Throughout the years I was working towards going freelance, I had various other jobs such as serving at different restaurants, piercing at a tattoo shop, and doing content creation as well as social media management for a marketing company in Dallas. I ended up taking a leap of faith after working at the marketing company, exhausted of having to work for someone else. The first year was extremely difficult, and I found myself applying to regular jobs again in the summer. I didn’t end up getting interviews for anything, not even basic jobs. Looking back on it, I think it was the universe telling me to hold on and keep trying because by the end of the year, my work had picked up significantly. 2024, I was constantly booked every month of the year. I began to trust in myself and feel more confident as time went on.
It took me around 3 years to finally figure out the style I want to brand with in my photography. I love to edit using bright and saturated, vibrant colors and mix that with dark features throughout the photo.
Some lessons I’ve learned along the way are –
Be personable and outgoing! Your network IS your net worth, and you will get a lot further if you are genuine and reliable as well as enjoyable to talk to and work with! I would argue that this is the most important skill to have in almost any career, and it has made a world of a difference in mine! Talk to people everywhere you go – you never know who you may meet!
Make your portfolio versatile – you are going to go much further if you don’t limit yourself to shooting a specific category! I was really able to turn this into a full time career once I started shooting a lot more commercial/brand work and portraits on top of already doing music and events! Practice practice practice and constantly do as many shoots as you can – try new things with editing as well and see what you’re drawn towards!
Hustle!!!! Any creative profession is a lot of work, but make it a priority to put yourself out there to reach the goals you set for yourself! I send emails and reach out for gigs all the time, and make sure to put my work in front of as many people as possible!
There is nothing else in the world I could imagine doing that would make me as happy as this does. This career has taken me to some pretty incredible places, and I feel so lucky to now be able to travel and do what I love! Some of the things I’m most proud of are being able to work directly with artists now such as Sean Paul, Illenium, Chase & Status, and Liquid Stranger, shooting a BOSS x NFL collaboration of Patrick Mahomes for Complex Magazine, being hired as a part of Most Valuable Promotion’s core media team to shoot the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, being a part of my first media team Wakaan Music Festival, my work being published in Forbes, Complex Magazine and the NY Post, and working with companies such as Live Nation, Danone/Danimals, Park Place Dealerships and Electric Shuffle!
I hope to show my passion of my work through every shoot I do!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
These are the restaurants I absolutely love in the DFW area –
Pizza – DeLucca’s, a brazilian style pizza spot where the servers walk around with pizzas you get to choose from!
Japanese – Uchi!!! I am obsessed with this place!
Ramen – Oni Ramen in Deep Ellum or Higuma Ramen & Izakaya in Addison are ridiculously good! I’m a vegetarian so it’s more difficult to find a solid ramen spot but if I eat ramen, it HAS to be creamy and these restaurants have delicious options!
Indian – Gurkha Bar & Grill in Euless – I used to live in this area and it became my absolute favorite Indian spot!
The best place to have fun doing an activity in Dallas is definitely Electric Shuffle – it’s an electronic shuffleboard place where you and your friends or a date can get your own shuffleboard table with different game options. The spot also has a full bar and menu with the most delicious food! My favorite treat there are the truffle mac n’ cheese bites – I could eat a million of those!
Anytime I’m looking for a good laugh, Dallas Comedy Club is the place I go! Even the shows I’ve attended where I didn’t know who the comedians were ahead of time I ended up loving, and the snacks on the menu are yummy!
A cool spot I like to go to when it’s warm outside is Klyde Warren Park! It’s located in the arts district downtown and on weekends, especially in good weather, is such a fun place to be. It’s filled with food trucks, live music, and even has a couple restaurants as well as a playground for kids! Walking around the arts district during the day is also really enjoyable and safe. My favorite museum is the Perot Museum of Nature and Science because it has interactive exhibits as you walk through the different floors of the museum!
On weekends, I’m usually shooting at a venue such as SILO, Stereo Live, or The Factory – those always have great electronic music shows!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a doubt, the person that deserves the most credit for the start to my career is my fiancé, Gage! He plays shows as a producer/DJ and I would always take photos and videos of him on my iPhone. One day, he told me I seem to have a great eye for capturing a moment and I should try taking photos with a professional camera. After my first shoot, I was hooked! Now, there’s nothing I love more than what I do. I am beyond grateful that he recognized the talent in me before I ever even considered photography as a career, especially during a time where I was lost on what I wanted to do with my life.
