We had the good fortune of connecting with Marvin Arts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marvin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process was pretty simple. I got into the career coaching and resume writing business because I want to help professionals succeed in their job search and excel on the job. I was a struggling job seeker early in my career, and I wanted to take my experiences and help others not make those same mistakes.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a thriving career coaching and resume writing service, but I am still working as a full-time HR professional for a nonprofit organization. There have been some challenges juggling both jobs, but I get to do what I love every day and provide a service that helps professionals achieve their career goals. I overcome my challenges by seeing my clients achieve their goals. That satisfies me and gives me the affirmation that my work makes a difference. I went from a struggling job seeker working at Walmart to make ends meet to running a thriving business utilizing my past mistakes and professional experience as an HR professional to help professionals land their desired jobs.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It really depends on the time of year. If they were to come during the fall, I’d have to take them to a Dallas Cowboys game and let them see “Jerry’s World.” One of my favorite restaurants in DFW is Spiral Diner, so we’d have to head out there and grab a bite. The Frisco area is one of my favorite places to hang out, with plenty of attractions and fun things to do.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Most deserving is my wife Ebony Arts, who helped me launch the business and continues to push me to give it my all every day. On the days that I want to give up, she motivates me to keep going. One of my favorite books is Rise and Grind by Daymond John, the founder of FUBU and TV personality on Shark Tank. It is an excellent motivational read for entrepreneurs. I also want to give a shout-out to Phylicia Jimenez. She had me as a guest on her Podcast, Black Joy & Bootstraps, and that appearance has helped my business out a ton.
