We had the good fortune of connecting with Marly Knapp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marly, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is a scary thing for most people. At the beginning of the year, I read Shonda Rhimes book, The Year of Yes!, and it has really made an impact on me. The book is about saying yes to the things that scare you and also to the small things. One thing I remind myself often is something the co- founder of Norwex, Debbie Bolton, says, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough!”
This year has been a year of scary goals not just for me, but for my whole family! I have spent a lot of time ruminating in the big goals we have collectively. My husband has ventured out on his own to build a BBQ business, and it has been a challenge at times to make ends meet. But, what I have seen in him is inspiring. His confidence, motivation and happiness have grown so much! I’ve taken on a few extra things to help out and I’ve grown a lot too.
When I started my business, there was a lot of doubt and a lot of questions. My husband even asked me if it was, ‘a scam’. There’s a lot of negative connotation around direct sales and a lot of people struggle to expand their network beyond their friends and family. Not many people can make a sustainable business or career out of it. It takes persistence and perspective to be able to see the opportunities in front of you. There’s a lot of mental toughness that comes with being a business owner. I think one of the best qualities I have and one of the best lessons I’ve learned is to work hard and not give up no matter what! In life, in relationships and in business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a woman who wears many hats. I have been blessed with an opportunity to work from home as an office manager and work while building my own business. This has given me time to create and build my brand and market myself as a uniquely qualified entrepreneur. I have spent countless hours researching, educating and creating a path for myself that I’m very proud of. I have become an avid reader of books that inspire and encourage me as a business builder and leader. The professional development and relationships I have built in the last 5 years are phenomenal. By far that has been my favorite part of this journey!
Because I have spent so much time learning and developing systems to be a social seller in our modern technological environment, I was able to pivot my business and help others pivot their business during the Covid-19 pandemic. The direct sales world rapidly changed and is continuing to change. I’m excited to be at the forefront of that evolution and feel equipped to help take the industry into the next phase. As we become more connected online, networking looks completely different in the digital age. Maintaining local and personal relationships is undoubtedly a challenge. Connecting and serving the community can add immense volume to your business. Through building relationships, volunteering with local schools, nonprofits and giving back, a local base can be built to help can carry you through tough times.
I focus my personal brand on offering solutions to my community to overcome challenges that we all face in our daily lives. Dishes, laundry and even our personal care routines can be taxing. I work hard to present tips, tricks and hacks that can reduce stress in your daily life. The idea is that if we can simplify our routines and create safe (chemical free), sustainable and healthy habits, we will save time and money. The best part is we can get back to doing the things we love with the people we love!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One thing that I enjoy doing is taking my family to the Texas State Fair. It’s a lot of fun to see all the different crafts, trades and expo events. We enjoy the food and rides too! Friday night band, and football, is always fun too! I would definitely take a friend there. Mexican food is my favorite! I love Tex- Mex. I’m always looking for good authentic pastor tacos too! I’m a big sports fan, so depending on the season, a stop by the Rangers, Mavs or Stars would be a must as well! There are so many great places to shop and dine, I probably frequent the Shops at Legacy in Plano most. Something on my bucket list is to tour the JFK Museum downtown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Throughout all of my time in my business, even with skepticism, my husband has always made space for me to pursue my passion. He sees the value in something that brings joy to my life. My business has allowed for personal development that has made me a better wife and mom, and he recognizes that. I couldn’t have done it without him.
