Meet Maris Young | Writer, Doula, Public Speaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maris Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maris, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I first started pursuing my creative inspiration, I tried to copy and paste the corporate structures I had experienced into life as an entrepreneur. I love what I do as a writer, doula and public speaker, and I was excited about giving myself the opportunity to work eight hours a day on projects that I truly enjoy. I didn’t stop to consider whether that framework was actually compatible with my life as a mother. So, when I quickly started struggling to uphold the work schedule that I had believed was necessary, I panicked.
In all honesty, it took years to shift my perspective of how my work days could look.. But these days, as a wife and mother of three, I’ve learned to appreciate the flexibility of entrepreneurship. I weave my work into my life in a way that still allows me to prioritize my family. Each day is an opportunity to design the life that suits us best.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After becoming a mother in 2017, I was drawn to learning everything I could about birth and postpartum. I felt compelled to guide other families across the threshold into parenthood. I started writing a blog called Young Honest Mother which soon evolved into Young Honest Mother: The Podcast. I worked on these offerings in the very slim margins of my day as a new mother myself. I remember feeling like those short work sessions would barely amount to anything, but I kept going. In 2023, I received the opportunity to get certified as a doula, a trained professional who provides educational, emotional and physical support to families on the verge of ushering in new life. It’s been such a full circle kind of feeling to be able to pass along what I’ve learned in my own independent studies of the the perinatal journey. In my time as a doula, I’ve also felt deeply inspired to take what I’ve learned and make it more accessible. So, I will be self-publishing a short minibook of birth-related wisdom very soon. My first minibook, Seeking Truth with AI was published in May 2025, paving the way for me to keep expressing what I’ve learned with a larger audience.
As someone who thrives in clearly structured environments, becoming an entrepreneur has really stretched me. This journey has helped me to develop a greater capacity for mental flexibility. I’ve had to discover ways to work more efficiently in order to still be able to priortize being present for my family.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were showing someone around Fort Worth, I’d create an itinerary centered around art, food and nature. We’d start the day off with a leisurely walk around the neighborhood near the Zoo. The lush, greenery is so vivid and inviting. Then, we’d head over to Bowie House for a delicious brunch situated in the midst of a boutique hotel turned gallery. From there, we’d wander through a few exhibits at the Kimball before grabbing a snack at one of the restaurants on Magnolia. As the sun set, we’d hang out at Trinity Park, walking along the river and admiring all the wildflowers.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has been my biggest supporter on my journey as a writer, doula and public speaker. He is a visionary who is always full of ideas about how I can hone my inspiration into offerings that support my community. I am forever grateful!
