We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Samples and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcus, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
One of the biggest things that I’ve done and consider a huge impact in my daughters life: allowing her to be herself. I grew up in an age where I was constantly told that I cannot be xyz (mostly won’t make any money as a graphic designer) and seeing now that while I know my parents had good intentions (albeit a bit misguided) I’m able to see my daughter and her generation able to have careers out of things that I never would’ve thought possible. Allowing her to embrace that side as well as just figure herself out has certainly paved the way for her to be able to forge her own path forward and understand what role she plays in this journey of life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a Designer/Art Director the biggest thing that I’m most proud of is actually sticking with my passion and turning it into a career. I’ve had MANY jobs and such but always seem to be drawn back to the creative world. With my influence being drawn from the likes of David Kassan, James Jean, Artgerm, and many other photographers, designers and graffiti artists out there that I see creating and pushing me to never just settle where I’m at and my current skill level. It has not been easy, it likely never will but being able to stand back, look at where I’m at and headed and still able to grow – that in itself is something that I don’t think I’d ever want to change the steps, mistakes, trials and errors that I have taken to get here.

What I would want the world to know about my brand is that it just is. There’s nothing really that I would use to define it (as I draw a lot of inspirations from other creatives in the world) And find myself doing many things and many hobbies (king of hobbies as my deceased brother Cardan would label me.) and I’m okay with that. Not being able to pinpoint who I am helps kinda define it in some sort of rebel way haha

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I mean, considering that they (I have multiple, they know who they are) are here – I think if anything they would be the ones showing me a great time and way around. Hahah – I tend to be a homebody nowadays as I just kind of like my peace, but as a former extrovert I do find myself craving a night out or around town. But you never know I’m certain wherever the wind takes us would likely be the best way to answer that if I’m being truthful

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My daughter Elisa C Samples. She’s been my biggest fan and support of all time and continues to give me a reason to go forward, challenge myself and keep growing. Another is Daisy Pastry Shoppe as they are really out here doing amazing things and allowing the world to experience them a treat at a time (definitely check them out if you want some unique and amazing desserts!)
