We had the good fortune of connecting with Eryka Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eryka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always knew I would be an entrepreneur, but when it came to the specifics of the business I would start, social media and marketing seemed like a no brainer. I majored in public relations and decided after some time in the field, I’d start a PR firm. But my last couple semesters of college, I got to take classes on social media and best practices for marketing and I fell in love. As someone who already spent a lot of time on socials and saw herself as a digital creator, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to help bridge the gap between generations of business owners and the most effective form of marketing and communication: social media.
I have a way of formulating concepts and visions for large-scale projects that stem from small ideas, and storytelling has always come easy to me. I thought it would be smart and useful to take the things I know and am good at to make extra money on the side and solve a problem many people have.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Social Relm is a marketing agency I created to help brands reach their full potential. I specialize in brand development and marketing and have a true passion for both. I launched my business in April 2023 at the age of 21 and am having the best time using my creativity to help brands grow!
One of the things that sets The Social Relm apart from other marketing agencies and social media management companies is that while most offer 2-5 service packages that potential clients can choose from, I offer an “a la carte” menu of individual services that can be bundled in any way, and only a couple packages just for social media management and content creation.
This ensures that I’m meeting the needs of my clients while allowing them to create their own experience and get a custom marketing plan unique to their individual brand.
I’m most excited to see the impact The Social Relm will have on the DFW community, the state of Texas and eventually, the country. So many business owners have top quality products but struggle to reach the people looking for those products. I’m honored and elated to be that middleman (or woman) who connects the two to each other!
I’m learning a new form of self discipline and responsibility. Balancing a 9-5 while staying on top of my 5-9 business is a challenge, but it gets easier every single day. I love having a full plate and honestly, as cliché as it sounds, because I love what I’m doing, it really doesn’t feel that much like work!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a huge foodie, and I like to surround myself with other foodies, so if a friend of mine were visiting Dallas for a week, here are some places we’d have to hit up:
– Trinity Groves Art Park: I love eating at the restaurants there and visiting the booths for drinks
– Dallas Farmer’s Market: Full of small businesses, great food, music and more
– Local Tap & Table: Amazing brunch food with live DJ on Sundays
– Deep Ellum: Full of local shops and stores, bars and restaurants (so easy to spend an entire day here)
– Dallas Museum of Art
– Campuzano Mexican Food (in Oak Lawn, food is 10/10)
– Turkey Leg Paradise: Chill vibes during the day, party vibes at night (Great food 24/7)
– State Fair of Texas: The best time ever, from food to drinks to games to cars and beyond (every year during September and October)
– Coffee House Café: Brunch and lunch heaven (food is amazing!!!)
– The Star in Frisco: Awesome events all the time
– Entranced Day Spa: Awesome massages and complimentary champagne
– Pepper’s Street Tacos: Some of the best tacos, burritos and quesadillas ever, and family owned!
– Red Claws Crab Shack: 10/10 seafood
– Boom Shack: 10/10 seafood
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely have to give a shoutout to God. He gave me the vision, helped me bring it to life and will continue to bring the right clients to me.
I also want to shoutout my mom for being so supportive and helpful throughout the development of my business, for giving me constructive feedback and always being there for me to bounce ideas off of.
To my friend Sommer for gifting me a book called Mind your Business: A Workbook to Grow Your Creative Passion into a Full-time Gig.
To my friend Diamond for being the most supportive person ever and always reminding me who I am and what I’m capable of.
