Meet MALIHA EBRAHIM | Early Childhood Educator and Administrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with MALIHA EBRAHIM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MALIHA, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Children who live in poverty, especially for an extended period of time, experience limited learning opportunities that can affect their ability and readiness to learn, and result in significant developmental delays. My aim was to open and establish a preschool with an enriched curriculum. As research indicates that early preschool programs – including those that extend into elementary school – and integrated programs that draw upon schools and childcare centers as a community base for the delivery of a wide range of services that impact across various contexts (home, school and community), can redirect children’s developmental pathways towards improved learning outcomes. Ecological theory suggests that the success of these programs lies in their capacity to reach multiple targets (child, student, parent, family) within multiple contexts and reinforce the learning that takes place within each. I am trying to follow this model as it draws upon a transactional conception of learning that acknowledges the multiple influences on a child’s readiness to learn, as well as the prevailing influence of the family context. Finally, an ecological conception is especially relevant to an examination of inequality in children’s readiness to learn because this conception shifts the focus towards an examination of the readiness of families, teachers, communities and governments to provide conditions that support children’s ability and readiness to learn. Such a focus is helpful as it is a child’s environmental conditions, rather than genetic endowment, that are open to transformation and policy intervention.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Why is Whiz Kid Learning Center preschool good for your child? Whiz Kid Learning Center helps children:
• get new knowledge and skills – for example, they start learning more about numbers, letters and words
• improve their communication and social skills through playing and interacting with other children and adults
• make new friends and develop new relationships with adults
• develop physical skills – for example, children learn to balance on play equipment and practice fine motor skills like drawing with a pencil and cutting with scissors
• develop problem-solving and creative thinking skills
• develop responsibility, independence, confidence and self-worth through doing things like looking after their own belongings and spending time away from home
• get ready for the transition to school.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teachers, and they know who they are for all the effort and time that they have put into the Preschool in recent years. It is because of their presence and contribution that the school had thrived as much as it has. Please know that you have made a mark on your student’s life, owing to the countless positive feedback from parents, I feel that I must highlight how much you’ve given to this Preschool and its students. I have also observed of how smoothly you’ve helped children using conscious discipline, and have assured them that the school is a safe haven.
In addition, your contribution in terms of curriculum implementation in simple forms of everyday play and lesson planning are truly appreciated by me. Thank you so much for thinking of the school as your own, as you tirelessly work for its betterment. I truly appreciate your presence and exceptional work.
