We had the good fortune of connecting with Malcolm “Scanlouz DeLeon” Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malcolm “Scanlouz DeLeon”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially I started my clothing brand because it was difficult to get affordable merchandise done for events we would put on. We would get overcharged for almost anything because we lacked the knowledge. So, after I decided to go into business for myself I started to enjoy the entrepreneur grind. Started reading more on the clothing business and started thinking of generational wealth. Nothing was passed down to me and my brothers and sisters so that’s what drives me now. I also have a little girl on the way so to be able to leave her with a hand up would be pretty dope.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I design clothing and the name of the brand is Live And Exist, because you can’t just do one. Most people grow up thinking working or going to school is the norm, outside of the ones who make it mainstream in any field(Music, sports, etc). It’s like were designed to be robots. Do this do that, without any real guidance or structure. So we encourage people to discover their purpose and focus on it. Let it allow you to go and get where you want to be while working hard for it. Our slogan is “The Truth Is In The Work”, because we believe if you put it in, in a real way, it’ll show for itself. I, just like some others, still work a 9 to 5 job while working for myself. I use what I make at work to fund my own business and I work a lot lol. However, I always find the time to advance my brand.. As I grew older it just didn’t make sense to work for someone else to purse their dreams without doing it for myself. It by all means isn’t for everyone, but it is. The early mornings and late nights take a toll but when you’re driven its all worth it. I try to find time for myself from time to time and that’s where musclewoman comes in. I love making music because it just gets my creative juices flowing and it helps we just take a deep breath and exhale the stress. It’s my go to outlet for everything. The biggest lesson I learned from this journey is paying attention to the details. Applyingthat to the business and life. There’s always something that’ll tell you to yes, this is the way or not, or you need to sit down and relax. Listen to you. Everything isn’t good for everybody and I had to learn that the hard way a few times but I’ve gotten better at it lol. I want the world to know, Live And Exist is a way you live your life. It’s unapolegetic, it’s motivation, inspiration and the biggest reminder to why you wake up every day and seize it and the opportunities you create. We want the world to know the voiceless have a voice and the unseen, we see you. Find that purpose and live and breathe it until you’re where you want to be and then keep going.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting, firstling in the morning what were doing is lifting weights in my home gym. That’s one of the biggest things I’m into right now. Of course get fresh and ready to go. Work on some orders because always got to get handle and we’re out. Go get a green drink from a smoothie place. A fire omelet from the breakfast spot. We like shopping so we’ll probably go do a bit of that. The different malls around, a guitar center. Definitely the Lords kitchen for lunch. Slide up to the studio and get some tracks done. We’ll probably spend a few hours in there creating. Songs, photoshoot, a video or two. After that, get some Jamaican food and back to the house to get re-freshed and paint the town. I’m not a big club person but we’d most likely bar hop til we call it a night. Wake up and get back to business.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give the biggest shoutout to my team. Past and present. The ones who started on this journey with me when we were in my mother’s kitchen and didn’t have to pennys to rub together. But kept the vision alive. I’m not a name dropper when it comes to shoutouts because I believe even the littlest value brought by someone should go noticed and some of those get lost in the process. So with that being said thank you to any and everyone who aided and had a hand in bringing and keeping Live And Exist Clothing Company thriving.
