We had the good fortune of connecting with Maddy Visser and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maddy, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Taking risks, Trusting myself and believing my craft!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is my muse. It’s my passion and i am lucky to say it is my profession. I was always super artistic as a kid, drawing, painting, organizing, etc. I never took it seriously but it was always an outlet for me. A few years ago I was blessed with the opportunity to begin tattooing in a studio. It was hard, and I doubted myself consistently but I had a good teacher who continued to push me and show me the ropes. As a beginner tattoo artist, you really don’t make much and it’s all about building character and understanding the process. With that being said, I still went to college and I worked a full time job as well. I was in class every morning, worked from 12-7 and then tattooed from 8-midnight almost every day at 18 years old. It quickly became extremely overwhelming, so I cut down on tattooing for a while until eventually I was only tattooing a few days out of the month. I hated it so much, I felt like a piece of me stopped working and I was falling behind on everything in life. I made a small studio in my apartment and picked up gigs when I could just to fulfill that need to be creative and give people a piece of art, they would love forever. I knew I wanted to do more, but I was scared to take that leap out of my safety net.
Just recently I made the biggest decision of my life to pursue tattooing full-time, and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. I questioned it and struggled to go through with it as it would completely uproot my way of life and it was not guaranteed to pay my bills. But I went with it, I worked my ass off to be where I am today. But I get to do what I love, every single day and you can’t get much more out of life than that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Dallas there are so many fun things to do. You have deep ellum, the arts district, gayberhood, lower greenville and so much more. Theres so many fun and cool places to eat and drink all over. I have lived here my whole life and still find new things everyday.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom! She has supported every decision I’ve made, whether bad or good. She’s my rock and she always has my back! I couldn’t do it without her.
