We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Hutson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsey, what do you attribute your success to?
At nearly 2,000 Instagram followers and growing, I have to credit a good portion of the success of The Gourmet Gilmore to the niche fans of the original Gilmore Girls series. There is so much space on the Internet for all kinds of blogs, social media accounts, etc., but because of that it can be incredibly hard to gain any traction. Choosing to start a project based on a show that means so much to so many people helped narrow my focus and basically created a perfect roadmap for my project that other superfans are excited to see unfold. Any time you can have a piece of a beloved fictional world brought to life, it is super special and I think that is something a lot people are interested in following. I am so thankful for all of the encouragement I’ve received since starting this project!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the content creator for The Gourmet Gilmore, a project where I attempt to cook all of the dishes made or mentioned by chef Sookie St. James (played by Melissa McCarthy) in the original Gilmore Girls series. I have played around with running blogs in the past, but always struggled to find a specific niche for my content, which was usually food-based. I’ve always loved cooking but have never done it in a professional capacity or had formal training. Using this project as a creative outlet has been the perfect “passion project” that has really challenged my lay-culinary skills, and I have been so proud to see what I am actually capable of doing (like stuffing and frying fresh squash blossoms or inverting chicken wings on the bone to make Thai angel wings). In addition to the food element of this project it has also challenged my marketing and branding skills, editing skills, writing skills, social media skills and my ability to run a website… (I’m still trying to figure out what SEO even means…), but just recently I’ve learned that just doing it is the hardest part of the battle. Consistency is really the key to a thing like this, so anything else learned or gained from the journey is a blessing!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite things about DFW is that it is so versatile. It’s got its big city, but it also has lots of small town charm weaved throughout it. If a fellow Gilmore fan was looking to visit DFW, I would show them all the Stars Hollow-esque sites that I love to frequent. Roanoke is full of amazing food (like the original Babe’s Chicken restaurant) and local shops (they’d have to get a slice of pie from Oak Street Pie Co.!), and same for Main Street in Grapevine. It has so many great antique shops, a farmer’s market and even a town square gazebo! Redefined coffee is a must, and downtown Grapevine and Southlake are legendary for their holiday celebrations in the square.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Any and all fans of the Gilmore Girl series! Without such an enthusiastic fan base, this project wouldn’t be possible. Clearly, Amy Sherman Palladino who created the show and the character of Sookie St. James who inspired this journey, and Melissa McCarthy who brought her to life and made her so incredibly endearing. I also need to thank my husband for putting up with countless hours of the Gilmores playing in the background of our lives and his willingness to try dishes he may have never tried otherwise; and finally, anyone who had a hand in creating the Joy of Cooking by Irma Rombauer, Marion Rombauer Becker and Ethan Becker. I have referenced that cookbook more in the past two years of this project than any other during my lifetime. It’s seriously one of the best reference guides for any recipe base!
