We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Houston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of L&G is the team of individuals behind us that have poured into this business to ensure we have all the tools necessary to prosper. Although Gabby and I are the faces of L&G, we have assembled of Board of Directors full of educators, medical professionals, and successful entrepreneurs to mentor us and provide feedback on our ideas to ensure we are making the most informed decisions possible. Without the support of our Board, L&G staff, the outside tutoring support provided by FlUrNing Learning Group, and our family and friends providing prayers and encouragement, we would not be where we are today. There was no blueprint to follow when creating L&G so the development of a supporting cast we could trust was extremely important in managing the growing pains all new businesses face.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
L&G, which stands for Lauren and Gabby as well as Learn and Grow, is focused on providing a safe learning space for Kindergarten through 5th-grade Scholars to minimize disruption to the educational development during a time parents have to make a multitude of tough decisions. We are committed to furthering the academic and social developmental needs of our Scholars while providing support and peace of mind to our parents. Our services include afternoon tutoring opportunities that have been provided by retired teachers, as well as the FlUrNing Learning Group. We are a small facility focused on limiting the exposure of the families we serve to Covid-19 by practicing social distancing, daily health checks, and creating a sanitary environment for our Scholars to thrive in. We are proud to provide support to families in need in an area that needs it. We specifically chose to start our business in Cedar Hill because of our strong ties to the community and the awareness that there are few resources in the Best Southwest area. The novice idea of creating a facility to act as the intermediary between schools and households to reduce the strain on families has been completely funded and developed by 2 young black women from the area wanting to show the community that anything is possible.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My goal would be to expose any visitor to some of the hidden gems around the city that could only be experienced while in Dallas. For kid friendly activities, I would suggest Klyde Warren Park, Perot Musuem, the Dallas Arboretum, and Trinity Groves. For a quick bite to eat I would suggest Wing’s World, Rudy’s Chicken, Sweet Georgia Brown’s, Hardeman’s BBQ, or schedule pickup from Ken Folk’s Kitchen. If my guests were looking to sit down somewhere for a good meal, True Kitchen Cocktails, Turkey Leg Paradise, and Pangea Restaurant are some of my favorite places to get a vibe to match the great food. Most people in my age group like to enjoy a good brunch on the weekend and enjoy a moment to decompress from the activities of the week. For me, the perfect Saturday includes getting a Soul Food Burrito from Brunchaholics while visiting the Farmers Market, followed by R&B (Rhythm and Brunch) event at the Crab House. There’s no other Sunday like a Dallas, Texas Sunday Funday so my list of places to frequent to make sure I enjoy my day to the fullest before heading back to work Monday include Dec on Dragon, The Pink, and Dibs on Victory. Needless to say, there is no shortage of things to do while in Dallas and the experience can’t be replicated.
