We had the good fortune of connecting with LaTamara Buggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaTamara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As I mentioned before Sugamamas was basically started by accident 😂 Once I realized I actually had “something” my thought process initially was this is a fun hobby! Then as I got older and matured, my thought process got serious and it was then that I realized that I wanted to leave my children with more! I wanted them to know that the impossible is actually possible! You can take a hobby and make it work for you!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a baker/treat maker! I design pretty edible things from huge wedding cakes to chocolate covered strawberries and candy apples! I am mostly self taught! I didn’t go to school for this however, I’ve taken a few classes to sharpen my skills! This journey is not been easy in any way! I’ve made some ugly cakes y’all! I’ve disappointed some people along the way, I’ve even wanted to quit! But I pray and meditate a lot! I knew that if this is what I really wanted, I was gone have to “thug it out” and keep going! I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that, it’s ok to say no! I bake within my means! I want the world, specifically little black girls to know that no matter where you come from, no matter who said no, you can still make it! Your dreams can become reality! You have to work for it, and you may loose some people along the way but don’t give up on your dreams!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man this is a tough one! I’m such a homebody! My best friend and I have been friends over 10 years so we’ve done it all lol! We’d definitely have to have tacos at some point in the day! Have y’all had Cali’s Street Tacos?! She’s the bomb! Drinks?! You haven’t had a drink until you had Jazzytails by my bartender friend Torri Demps! After that, knowing us…we’ll probably end up at the house, on the couch laughing about old memories!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Hands down my husband! He has been my rock this entire journey! He believes in me more than I believe in me! May 2016 he literally forced me to make my first cake! I had no clue what I was doing but her we are 4 years later and cakes are my cash cow! Even now when I want to decline an order because it seems “hard” my husband is always saying no! Take it! Push yourself! You got it! Also my best friend Starla! She started this with me! She had no clue what we were doing but she was with it all the way! She’s been by my side cheering me on since the day I called her with the idea! Lastly my mama!! Ain’t nothing like mama y’all! She bought me my first stand mixer, which I still use to this day! I saw her beat the unthinkable and I owe it to her to be successful!
