We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyla Dailey Alfaro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyla, how do you think about risk?
When anyone hears the word “risk”, we automatically think negatively or positively about taking risks. Our minds go to failing or all the “what if” questions. In every area of life, risks must be taken and we either fail and learn from our risks or they could be the best, life-changing risks that has ever happened to us. I believe risks and taking risks are needed and important in our lives. For me, I stepped out and took a risk to start my own small business and it was the best “risk” I’ve ever taken. I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something I thought I could never do. All the “what if” questions entered my mind; “what if no one buys from me?”, “what if I fail and I have to shut my business down?”, “what if I don’t make any money?”, “what if I create things I love and everyone else hates them and makes fun of me?” Every negative question I could think out entered my mind but I didn’t dwell on them. Do I struggle with them still? Of course, who doesn’t struggle with that, but I believe stepping out and taking risks will always change your life. Step out of your comfort zone, achieve goals you never thought you could achieve and take all the risks just to look back and say “I did that!”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started Adored Accessories in 2016 while in college. If I’m being 100% honest, I started my business because every piece of jewelry I saw, I knew I could make on my own. Being a college student, I didn’t exactly have a budget for accessories, so I began creating my own. Those around me saw what I was creating and told me I should start selling my designs. That is when I started an Etsy. In the early stages of Adored, I was making choker necklaces for women and beaded bracelets for men. I loved everything about it; I loved seeing peoples faces light up when they received and wore their chokers and bracelets. I loved using my gifts to create something one of a kind! As we all know, fashion trends come and go and slowly chokers were out of style, so I stopped my Etsy for awhile and focused on school. One day my mom showed me a pair of polymer clay earrings and I fell in love. I personally felt that the styles looked timeless! It was at that moment, I knew I could relight my passion of creating by taking these clay earrings and making them my own. It wasn’t until I started creating clay earrings that I really got the reason behind my “why”. Why do I love creating earrings? Why do I love using my gifts? It was all because of the people! I love making people feel beautiful. I love reminding people that they are loved and adored! Whether that be in a pair of earrings or a beaded bracelet, my “why” is reminding people that they are valuable and loved! My small Etsy business turned into my now small business “Adored Accessories.” I run and operate my small business from my apartment in Euless, TX and mostly sell through my website, but recently I was asked to join a boutique in Bishop Arts! I never, in a million years, thought my choker idea would one day turn into me running my very own accessories small business. I know there are a lot of polymer clay accessory businesses out there but I think what sets me apart from others is that I am myself. I try different things, some fail of course, but I don’t give up. I think stepping out and trying different things but sticking to who I am is important. Our course I have run into discouragement. I have compared myself to other clay businesses and asked myself why don’t I start doing things like them, they are always selling out, but I have to go back to my “why”. Stay true to yourself. Don’t compare yourself to others. Comparison is the thief of joy. When I started comparing myself to others that’s when I started hating what I was doing. I was never content with an order. When I leaned to stay myself, whether I get 1 order or 20 orders I get excited to continue in the business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, that is such a hard question to answer. I’m a planner but I also love to have fun. For my personality, I love to always be on the go. I love going to Bishop Arts and checking out all the super cute businesses (that is also where the boutique my earrings are located in) so Bishop would be a stop for me. Maybe get a slice of pie from Emporium Pies… no defiantly get a slice of pie and enjoy it outside. If you love coffee, there is a coffee shop in Coppell I love called, Ascension Coffee. I know there are other locations but Coppell is beautiful. I love being able to drink coffee and walk along the water. My friend works there so that’s a bonus as to why I love going to get coffee from there. Let’s go get sushi in Carrollton at Kura and stop after to eat ice cream and explore all the amazing Korean-American supermarkets. I feel like I have stoped in multiple cities but I love going different places and trying new things out. I can’t stick to one place, we would travel to different cities and try new foods, coffees and desserts because I love sweets.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, my biggest support system is my family and my husband. They have called gifts out of me that I didn’t even know I had in myself. Of everyone in my family, I would love to say a huge thanks to my mom. From the very beginning, she has stayed by my side and supported every dream. I can remember at the very beginning of the start of Adored Accessories, she would stay up late with me helping me create all my new products. When I had to go to school, she would take her free time and create new designs and take product photography for my instagram and website. Without her love, help and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. She is still the one I call when I create new products and she is still my biggest fan and supporter. She makes me keep going and reminds me everyday just to have fun and never stop creating. Without my mom, Adored wouldn’t be where it is now and I defiantly wouldn’t still be in the game.
