We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristal Sabbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristal, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up in the backwoods of Arkansas, on a rock road….. better known as Kerr Road. I had a good childhood, playing with my cousins everyday, learning from and being influenced by each of them; however, I always knew I was different. I don’t claim to be someone I’m not, nor do I claim to have been born with a silver spoon in my mouth because that’s not the case. I watched my Grandparents and my Mother work hard, which that same work ethic was instilled in me without saying. All I ever saw was everyone in my family work hard for someone else’s prosperity. Once I got a small taste of entrepreneurship, I knew making someone else wealthy based on my hard work wouldn’t be my destiny. I’m now the owner of 5 thriving businesses. Initially, the drive and motivation was inherent because I wanted to. Now that I’m a Mother to a beautiful 10 month old Daughter, the motivation and drive are due to her. I want her to know success is not given to you but it’s earned. Everything I do from this point forward is a building block for her legacy.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am Co-Owner of Suites @ 35 and Salon Utopia LLC. When my Business Partner, Kimberly Sylvan and I, set out to open our initial salon we wanted to create an environment that empower women. We wanted every woman that entered out establishment to leave looking even more beautiful than before and we wanted her to have an inner confidence that radiated. We knew the odds were stacked against us, being African-American female entrepreneurs. We wanted to defy the stereotype that plagues us as Black women. Five years later, here we are thriving, growing, and setting an example for our Daughters.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a pretty simple girl so I can’t say we would do anything out of the way! We would definitely have to start with Sunday brunch. The D/FW metroplex has some of the best spots for brunch and I must say my favorite is still tried and true Blue Mesa. Hopefully, it’s summertime and we can spend some time at home, poolside. Some of my other favorite spots include the Shops at Legacy, Gloria’s, the Arboretum, and the Rockwall Harbor. Like I said, I pretty simple. I love nature and the simple things in life.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Ava…. You’ve only been in this world 10 months but you continue to inspire me each day. I see the persistence in your eyes and that only makes me strive harder so that I may create a legacy for you. You challenge me, you motivate me, and for that I’m grateful. I prayed for you tirelessly, not knowing if God would bless me with a child; nevertheless, He saw fit. I love you Baby Girl and I look forward to passing on a strong legacy to you.
