We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim D. Canales and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim D., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As someone who is neurodivergent, I am my best self when I am doing something I am passionate about AND when I am in charge of the time table for it. When I would work at typical jobs, I would do one or two outdoor art events a year and I was incredibly happy and focused. I knew that I needed to make producing art a larger part of my life that it ever had been before.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am captivated by the weird and the unique, fantasy and reality, the spooky and the whimsical. Anyone who has ever known me knows three things: I am an artist; I love animals; and I love Halloween. As for creating my artwork, my creative vision has never been confined by one type of artistic medium. Depending on the piece, sometimes I am a sculptor, sometimes I am a painter, and sometimes I am something entirely different. Making art has always been my passion and has helped me through good times and hard times. I have worked in a few different fields in which I excelled, but my health was being adversely effected by what my brain perceived as injustices in the workplace and corporate bull. I had to follow my heart and to go back to my true love, creating art. Now, it is not easy doing what I do. I put in long hours and when I my work is not covering my bills, I have to supplement my income by driving for an app. But I am happier in my career that I have ever been and my health has vastly improved.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anyone that lives in the area knows that Dallas, Fort Worth, and all the cities around them are like one giant city. The DFW metroplex. So, we would go all over the area. We would definitely see a drag show at 1851 Club in Arlington, dance at The Church goth club night at It’ll Do Club in Dallas, eat at Italy Pasta & Pizza in Fort Worth, go shopping at Hearth Wisdom metaphysical store in Pantego, hang out in at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, go to the Dallas World Aquarium, drink while listening to local bands at the Chat Room Pub in Fort Worth, get tattoos at Vato Loco Tattoo Studio in Arlington, and seek out all the antique and thrift stores we can find.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely this shout out would be dedicated to my supportive family, but in particular my amazing husband. Hector helps me stay on task when I am working in my home studio, lets me bounce my endless ideas off of him, and he is at almost every event assisting me while I sell my work. I affectionately introduce him at events as “the muscle”.
