We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Jose and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Growing up, I loved cheesecake. We didn’t have it very often but it was my favorite dessert as a kid. Shortly after our first daugther was born, my mother-in-law made a cheesecake. Afterward, I didn’t think it looked to difficult and thought I would give it a try too. My first cheesecake was a success! Within a very short time I was looking for more cheesecake recipes and beginning to experiment. I would take them to family and work functions. Before long, co-workers and friends began asking if I would make one for them. The business pretty much found me!
What should our readers know about your business?
I am still in the infancy of my business. In the last couple years, I have grown from baking for friends and co-workers to baking for businesses, churches, weddings, and the wonderful community of Rockwall. Although I have been creating and baking cheesecakes for over 20 years, I have only recently been focusing on cupcake-size cheesecakes that I call ‘cheesecakecups’. One someone wants something sweet, many people are conscious of the sugar and calories that come with. The cheesecakecup is the perfect size to take care of the craving and not go overboard! I love being able to create different flavor combinations that look as good as they taste. Currently, I have over 100 different options with a list of more waiting to be made.
Social Media has been a huge help in growing my business the last couple of years. Although I do not have my own storefront as of yet, that may happen someday. I utilize commercial kitchens as needed for now. My biggest challenge is not being able to take the next step financially yet. I am focused on growing my brand recognition through social media and word-of-mouth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love downtown areas of smaller cities. These areas attract more small businesses and restaurants that reveal the heart and passion of people like myself. Whether its downtown McKinney, Garland, or Rockwall, I would definitely pick those areas to share with a friend.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out to my mother-in-law, Cheryl, who made a cheesecake for me that inspired me to begin baking my own. I also want to shout out to my wife, Tawana, who has always encouraged me to pursue my passions.
