We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenzie Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenzie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I started dancing when I was 2 years old at a local studio as a way to put my extra energy towards something more useful than bouncing off the walls at home. At least that’s what my mom says. Because I loved dancing, my parents made the decision for me to enroll at Texas School of the Arts where I would be able to study visual arts, theatre, and music as part of my every day curriculum. I discovered my passion for acting, singing, and being on stage because of the opportunities I was given at TeSA.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Like the rest of the world, 2020-2021 presented many challenges for live theatre. While Broadway was shut down, elementary schools were still figuring out ways to give students a chance to be on stage. I had finally been cast in my first lead role as Edwina in the musical “Dear Edwina Jr.” only to find out that the production would not be in front of a live audience. Each scene was prerecorded and I quickly had to figure out how to sing full voice in a mask. I did not want a pandemic to take away the excitement I felt for being in the spotlight, so I persevered and figured it out! I am proud of myself and my castmates for taking on not only the challenge of a full production, but a full prerecorded production in masks.

I think that sums up who I am as a performer. I am a hard worker who will make sure that I give 100% to every role I am given big or small. I love just being a part of something bigger than myself!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, my absolute favorite spot to eat in Fort Worth is Charleston’s on Hulen. Their potato soup is to die for! I would definitely take them to a show at Granbury Theatre, Plaza Theatre Company in Cleburne or even Bass Hall if we were feeling fancy. I am a simple kid who loves roaming the aisles at Target and getting a snow cone at Bahama Bucks on West 7th. You can never go wrong with a walk around the Stockyards in your cowboy boots either!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of course, I have to thank my family first because of their constant love and encouragement. My parents have sought out opportunities for me to learn, grow, and become a better performer. I am lucky to have a huge support system cheering me on every step of the way who will always be my number one fans!

Texas School of the Arts has been my home for all things fine arts. My teachers and directors have helped shaped me into a well rounded performer and always motivate me to do my best. They have challenged me to push myself out of my comfort zone and take risks even when I doubt myself or my talent.
