We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla McCain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been working in content and social media marketing since 2011 and have done it all from agency level work to corporate marketing. While I loved working on large scale marketing campaigns, I always had a passion for helping small businesses who couldn’t afford the agency price tag. I had freelanced on the side for years, but in 2016 I was diagnosed with a chronic vestibular disorder that pushed me to finally open up shop on my own. I was no longer able to work under bright lights and in a noisy environment, so in 2017 I decided it was finally time to take my freelancing career to full-time.

In the last 5 years, I have worked with nonprofits and small businesses in the healthcare space that make a direct impact to people suffering with my condition.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since I can remember, I’ve been curious. Curious to know more about what’s happening in my community, the latest trend, and even just an explanation of everyday oddities.

Shortly after graduating from the University of Idaho in 2011, I moved to Dallas where I started my career at a marketing and communications agency. I entered the workforce when social media made its first boom as a marketing necessity for businesses. Social media is a great way for businesses to share their story and give the world a glimpse into what makes their company unique and a chance to control their narrative. As it has evolved, I have been there evolving professionally alongside with it to continue to help companies utilize the power of online chatter.

In the duration of my career, I have worked on both the agency side and corporate, but always had a passion to help small businesses, which led me to begin freelancing. That passion turned into a healthcare niche and focus when I was faced with issues with my own health in 2016. I wanted to work with brands that had products or services that helped people find a solution to their ailment or disorder. Marketing is a powerful tool, and I have been fortunate enough to use my skillset and background to help nonprofits and small businesses help the greater good by reaching people online.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have lived in Dallas for the past 10 years, and it’s crazy to see how much the city has grown. I still have my favorite go-tos but with some fun new additions.

One of my favorite things about Uptown/Downtown Dallas is the Katy Trail. When I am not working, I’m a runner, so I would instantly tell people to go for a stroll and finish at Katy Trail Ice House for drinks and chips and queso. If you make it to the end of the trail in Downtown, you’re also a quick walk to Victory Park that has grown a lot since I have lived here. You can catch a Stars or Mavs game, go to a movie at Cinepolis and check out so many great new restaurants. Dallas is also known for our beautiful skyline so grabbing a drink on a rooftop bar such as “Upside at the Canopy Hotel” is a perfect way to end the evening.

Of course, Dallas is also known for great shopping, and Northpark Mall is the place to go.

If you catch yourself on the Fort Worth side of the metroplex (where I live now), you will find me hanging out in the Shops at Clearfork or in the Magnolia District.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To say that anyone finds success without the support of their inner circle would be false. At least for me. When I was diagnosed with chronic vestibular migraine and vestibular neuritis (conditions that cause you to be dizzy and unbalanced) I was in a dark place. For months I wasn’t able to leave my house, work, drive, participate in social engagements and thought that my life as I knew it was over. But to be honest, my life as I knew it has changed – but for the better.

I credit that in large part to my husband, Marc. He could have jumped in the pit of despair with me, but instead, helped me navigate what my “new normal” would look like. He helped me find the right doctors and the right treatment options which ultimately helped me get to a point where I could not only work again, but open my own business.
