We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Martinez and Ashley Concepcion and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla and Ashley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Our thought process behind starting our podcast started as a creative outlet for us as new moms. Working through being a new mom, while in a pandemic, working full-time from home, along with all of the emotional and mental imbalances that come with postpartum, we realized we needed something to connect to outside all of the chaos surrounding us. Through our every day conversations, venting, and laughing as we were learning the ropes of motherhood, we jokingly thought “we should start a podcast.” Weeks later, a formal conversation was had where we realized this was a great opportunity to encourage, relate and connect with other moms through sharing our experiences as new moms.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The Motherhood: Calling Over Chaos podcast was created to provide encouragement with real life context and lots of laughs to new and seasoned moms all while sharing what God is doing in us and through us as new moms.
What sets this podcast apart from others is the heart behind it, not the talent, skill, or a large following. Neither of us went to school for this and we certainly didn’t plan to ever launch a podcast. We have no education or experience in podcasting, social media, marketing, etc. Kayla got her bachelors in English and a Masters in Education and after 12 years of working for a University, left it all behind to be home with her son and put more of her heart and energy into this podcast. Ashley got her bachelors in Health Administration and worked as a healthcare professional in both local clinics and hospitals for over 10 years; she too made the same decision to go all in with this podcast and be at home with her son. We are both very ambitious and hardworking, so just because we don’t know how to do something doesn’t mean we won’t figure it out. We’ve jumped in with both feet and are learning as we go with the help and support of our husbands. This was never about creating a following or becoming influencers or mom bloggers. Our heart is simply to connect, encourage and help other moms, especially new moms. If we are able to encourage and make even just one mom feel like she’s not alone, then that is more than enough for us.
It definitely has not been easy. Finding time to record and come up with content and strategy for our platforms has stretched us. We’ve learned that just because we have the flexibility of time and being at home, doesn’t mean we have to lean into that. Instead, we’ve found that setting up some structure and routine around this podcast is much more amenable to our personalities.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being stay at home moms, we love kid friendly places around San Antonio we can take our little ones to have fun with their friends while we catch up with ours.
Hemisfair Park is such a fun spot with a few local restaurants and coffee shops. There’s a park to play at and in the summer your little ones can enjoy the splashpad. Best part? This is a little to no cost day out as you’re only paying a few bucks for parking!
The Pearl is another fun spot we like to gather with our girlfriends, a date with our husbands or even a play date with our littles. Occasionally, you’ll find fun fairs or farmers markets happening. There are a lot of great places to eat for you and for the kiddos, there’s a splash pad, and on Friday there’s a free story time happening at a local bookstore.
Last but not least Southtown attracts people from all over SA with fun vibes, and a ton of beautiful historic homes in the King William District. There are trails along the river to sightsee with the family, shops, trendy cafes and bars, a brewery and even concerts are held nearby at the Blue Star Arts Complex. If you’re looking for a place with a little bit of everything for everyone this is it!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would not have been able to get through the early stages of being a new mom without the love, support and encouragement of our church family. We wouldn’t be the women and mothers we are without the leadership and guidance of our incredible pastors. We are so blessed and grateful to be planted at Grace Avenue Church.
We’d of course be remiss not mention our incredible husbands. They’ve both embraced their role as new fathers but have also cared for, supported and cheered us on every step of the way as moms and podcasters. They both also contribute to this podcast by taking monthly professional pictures that we can use for content in addition to creating graphics and design work to build up this platform.
