We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Driver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking sounds super tricky but it actually is not. While it can have a profound affect on life it is also just a part of decision making. We all make teeny tiny, regular sized and gigantic decisions in our life and the quantifiable risk is always there. Every decision we make whether we deem it as high risk or low is still something that is going to shift, propel or slow down our process in life and work. I have been fortunate enough to work for other companies and for myself and I have to say that one of the things I appreciate most about having my own business is that I am taking risks and making decisions based on my needs, my families needs and the needs of my companies as well as my community. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to forge my own path.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a Creator first all of my work feels like an expression. I fell in love with Elkins, WV during the pandemic as I would walk with my young child around time and envision what I believe it could be. I bought a building downtown in an area where there were quite literally people living in store fronts, empty store fronts and sadness. Since that time I have remodeled, opened two businesses and have supported another business coming into my building. I have amazing residential tenants and have also remodeled apartments and I am not done yet! I plan to create a community green space as well as an additional business called The O.H. or The Outdoor Hub to support our communities love for getting outside.
Acting on vision is never an easy route but it is a rewarding one and one that can not be done without support.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite things to do when friends come into town are:
Hiking in Fox Forest and then snagging yummy drinks at TipTop Coffee and speciality treats from Dandelion Candy Co. and then going to City Park to linger, sketch and daydream.
I love having dinner at The Forks and soaking up the amazing view there. I adore going to Bickle Knob and seeing the 360 degree views of the Appalachian Mountains I now call home.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could absolutely can not do what I do or could not have done what I have done in my life without my parents and my family. They provide endless support. I have AMAZING friends who root me on with every step I make and a community that has accepted me, supported me and believed in my vision. I am at heart an artist and creator and so a few years ago I did The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron with two soul sisters. It quite literally changed my life.
