We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy Chlan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
For me, it is the authenticity of my brand. My brand is Unfiltered Kathy for a reason. What you see is what you get. You see the chaos, the messy part of life, but most of all the humor side. I have been told I make people laugh and forget about what is going on in the world, even for a little while. I did a video last year with 8 other moms who had really big followings. The video went viral and has over 4 million views. My role was standing on my front porch in a pair of Depends. Enough said.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There is never an easy road to success. But that’s what makes you grow as a person! I think I am most proud of the book that I wrote dealing with raising my special needs son. I took the journal I kept and made it into a book titled “Maternally Challenged – How My Special Needs Son Taught Me To Sack Up and Laugh!” It was my story of how I entered motherhood and how I took something and turned it into a life filled with laughter. My philosophy has always been that I would rather laugh than cry. Life throws you curveballs and you just need to know how to hit that ball. I have 2 boys – the oldest is Casey and he is 28 and Christian is 25. They are probably my 2 greatest accomplishments.
The one thing my mom would always say to me when I was struggling was “you are exactly where you should be at this time.” My brand focus on that. Life is like a card game. It is not about the hand you get, but how you play that hand. Play it with dignity, grace and a whole lot of humor.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay. If I was still in my twenties, this would be answered differently. I live by the beach, so we would definitely lay in the sun for awhile. We, of course, would hit happy hours at certain restaurants. Because now it is all about the food. LOL. Taking a bike ride along the ocean would be a priority. Exciting places or people have changed for me over the years. If you are with a friend who makes you laugh and accepts you for who you are, that is awesome.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not keep pounding the pavement if it was not for my dear friend/colleague Cheldin Barlatt Rumer. She is the founder of This Is It Network. Cheldin just makes you want to be all you can be, no matter the hurdles or walls that you have to climb. She is a woman who pays it forward and just wants all women to succeed.
