We had the good fortune of connecting with Kasey Scharnett King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kasey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a mother and wife, my thought process behind started my business was rooted in family. 9-5 careers don’t normally fit with “mom life.” I want to attend every play, every game, every choir event and volunteer or be at school parties when I want. I enjoy sitting down for dinner every evening and being home when my kids arrive or be the one to pick them up.. Working a 9-5 had limitations that did not fit for my family structure. My kids are able to hang out at my office and it’s never a problem. I even encourage couples I work with, to bring their kids along, and not allow it be a barrier to them receiving services. I love the work I do, however, being a wife and mother is always a priority to me and it is reflected through the way I structure my business.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Sex Therapist, trained mediator, author and speaker. I own Lavender Healing Center, a practice that focuses on improving and restoring relationships. I am a Navy Veteran and have traveled the world. Through these travels, I have been afforded to see relationships from different worldviews that crosses book knowledge-into life experiences. This allows me to be present with clients that come here from other countries. Veterans feel at home, when they are in my practice because someone understands their world. This is what I am most proud of-having the world as my education as much as school.
I got to where I am now in business by listening to my body and trusting it, creating a plan and discussing it with my partner. What people, who want to go into building a practice, don’t understand is once you become a business owner, therapist is maybe 40% of what I do and the rest is managing a business. It was definitely not an easy process, but I relied on my network and tons of reading to push through. The hardest thing I had to learn was being okay with turning people away and setting hard boundaries, as people will push them. I was exhausted my first 2 years because I wanted to help everyone that came through the door-which was a recipe for burnout. I am now specific about who I serve and refer others to my colleagues.
I want the world to know there is more than one path to healing and therapy looks different to everyone. Our mental health is our life source without it, we suffer greatly. We are in a world where loneliness is at an all-time high and my purpose is to get us loving again. I am here to restore hope and healing in relationships, so our children, in turn, will have the tools to navigate life without fighting against high ACE scores.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I may take you around DFW, so hold on!
Marion Sansom Park is where we will start because hiking it is the most peaceful thing to do here. Breakfast/Lunch is Righteous Foods because again-small, quiet and is a hidden gym for health nuts. Also 360 Bruch House has such a delicious menu-it is a great spot for breakfast or late lunch.I love to explore different coffee shops so we will definitely have to hit up Black Coffee, Ampersand and Roots throughout the week. Dinner, let’s go to Dallas! I have had the best snapper in DFW at Aldeez Afribbean Resteraunt in Dallas and my husband enjoys their oxtails. They are my go-to whenever I leave the Improv after a live comedy show. Another great must stop is Kitchen+Kocktails. Friendly staff, great food and you feel like family when you walk through the door. Lastly, The Tipsy Alchemist is a must. The vibes are amazing and their handcraft drinks are the best in town. There are so many great spots here, you would have to stay longer than a week, but these are a few of my favs.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are two people I primarily attribute my success-my grandmother and husband. My grandmother was the hardest working woman I knew and was never too busy to pour into us. Even now that she is in spirit form, my business is attributed to her and my goal is still to make her proud. Charlie, my husband of 17 years, has been the best supporter in every thing I have achieved. Seeing his work ethic- pushes me. He celebrates all of my moments, big and small and encourages me to go as high as I desire.
