We had the good fortune of connecting with Kandace Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kandace, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Growing up I’ve always had a strong passion for skincare due to my struggles with sensitive skin, acne & eczema over the years. From Clindamycin, Tretinoin, Proactive, Hydrocortisone, Accutane, you name it I tried it.

After countless appointments with different dermatologist I felt defeated after little to no improvement and terrified when I learned about the side effects of all the medications I’ve taken over the years.

One day I decided enough was enough and took control of my body. I did my research through books and documentaries and learned that healthier foods, herbs and clean, natural skincare was what my body was yearning for!

I began making products at home in my kitchen and when I saw how my skin transformed I got the confidence to share them with family & friends and officially start Uncovered Beauty.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business was fueled from a place of passion and pain.

Passion because I knew how it felt to always feel so uncomfortable in my skin and I didn’t want anyone else to suffer for as long as I did. Pain because after losing my father from brain cancer and learning that everyday skincare products have been linked to cancer and multiple other sicknesses, I knew it was my duty to provide safe, clean skincare for all.

I would say I’m most proud of how my business was so well received. I started my business June 12,2020 and by April of 2021, I was able to resign from my 9-5 job as a research coordinator and pursue entrepreneurship full time.

It definitely wasn’t easy to get to where I am today. I had to sacrifice my social life, free time, sleep, my life savings and personal wants to build my brand.

I’ve definitely learned a lot throughout my journey, the two lessons that stick out the most to me is that failure is inevitable and quitters never win.

I’ve made several mistakes and at the time felt like those mistakes were the end of the world. As I’ve grown in business those same mistakes have taught me very valuable lessons and allowed me to grow tremendously.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take her to King Street in Charleston, S.C. We would eat at my favorite restaurant, Hall’s Chophouse, get drinks at Grill 225 and hang out at a rooftop lounge.

Rainbow Row is definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit, it’s known for its captivating, pastel colored homes and it’s one of the most historic sites in Charleston.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother deserves the biggest shoutout!

I started Uncovered Beauty while working as a research coordinator in clinical trials and my job was very laborious working for the Department of Surgery.

I relied heavily on my mother every week to work in the store and help package & ship orders while I worked my 9-5. She even worked the store on the weekends so I could stay at home and make products. Because of her tremendous help and dedication I was able to resign from my job in April of 2021 and begin my journey as full time entrepreneur.
