We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Orton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by my family – my wife, Kelsey, and my kids, Charlie and Parker. Parker was born at the height of the 2020 pandemic, and that meant we had a lot of family time at the house since we weren’t going out much. That precious time together as a family really reinforced the things that are important to me; family and faith. Our family stopped being pulled in different directions and started sharing more “things” together. Suddenly, family movie night was an event to look forward to, and the nights where we didn’t feel like cooking became pizza parties. I even learned the names and personalities of all of Charlie’s dolls!

In many respects, our family thrived during the pandemic, so much so that I was able to leave my former company and start my financial advisory practice early in 2021. While there was already an infrastructure and foundation for me, it still added uncertainty into my family’s lives. My wife is in the financial services industry as well so she keeps me thinking in realistic terms.

I find that people are often underserved and underinformed about all things financial, and I make it my goal to help as many people as possible feel confident about their futures. I get a great sense of pride when my clients tells me they feel secure about their today and confident about their tomorrow.

What should our readers know about your business?
It brings me a great deal of joy to help individuals, families, and small businesses in the area of financial services. I spent the first 10 years of my career helping financial advisors better serve their clients; now I have the honor of serving and helping my clients myself.

My practice is with Capitol Wealth Strategies, which is a Texas-based business specializing in a “protection first” approach to building financial plans. It is through this framework that I’ve been able to have success. The financial plans we create consider our clients’ needs and goals, and each one is unique. For many of my clients, their ultimate goal is to retire comfortably, which can feel daunting at times. By helping them create a secure retirement and financial plan, my clients have a new found confidence in their ability to fulfill their goals. Since we consider all aspects of our clients’ lives, many of the financial plans we create for our clients include employee pensions (including TRS/TMRS) and 401k plans, college planning for their kids, tax mitigation solutions, insurance, “what if” scenarios and solutions, and setting up their beneficiaries for financial independence and success.

Transitioning to this new career has not always been easy. The main thing I’ve kept in mind to overcome my obstacles is the fact that people simply need help. I have encountered many folks who feel confident planning on their own, but I’ve run into many, many more who do not. One lesson I’ve learned is that listening to my client’s fears and uncertainty, and being genuinely interested in what they have to say, is often more powerful than the solutions I provide to them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Even though we live in Keller, we like to get out as a family as often as we can. We usually find ourselves at a brewery where we can be outside and still entertain the kids. Our favorite spots are Shannon Brewing, Maple Branch Brewery, Tupps Brewery, and Armadillo Ale Works. For food, we love Boca 31, Bayou Jacks, and Craft & Vine, which are all in the Keller/Roanoke area. If we’re wanting a formal dinner we’ll go to either in Truluck’s or Perry’s in Southlake. I love soccer so I also love checking out FC Dallas games in Frisco.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad instilled a strong work ethic and moral values in me from an early age. I can’t ever recall him missing a day of work or not showing up for one of my football games as a kid. He always challenged me to do the right thing at school and to try my best. Even now, he is always supportive of me and my family. Thanks, dad!

My wife has given me unconditional love and support throughout our marriage. She has done so much to lift up our family. Kelsey, thank you for being the glue that holds us together and for putting up with me!

Also, thank you to Jonathan Kirby, Chris Thrower, and Jason Watson for your belief in me and your mentorship as I started out on my new career path. The encouragement and guidance you all have given me has been priceless.
