We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Ryan Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph Ryan, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Making people more confident and beautiful has always been one of my passions. I grew up in an extremely loving family with the best parents and want others to share in my golden moments. Making just one persons day better creates a ripple in the pond that extends far past my immediate community. With social media, it has allowed me to be apart of others lives across the globe.

I love hearing how I’ve inspired others to be better or help them feel better about themselves. I truly enjoy giving back to my community. We host a breast cancer fundraiser for the entire month of October to help a local cancer clinic, among other charity events. I want my clients to leave feeling as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Not all salons are created equal. At Ryan Wayne Salon we treat each client like a work of art. No matter where they currently are, we help them achieve the look they’ve always wanted not just what they’ve had. In many cases it’s like magic. Specializing in hair extensions and volume systems allows clients with little to no hair to feel confident and beautiful. We are giving them a lifestyle, not a hair appointment. We don’t just look at their hair, we look at them as a blank canvas. From head to toe, we create and design the perfect look that transforms them physically and emotionally. Like all art, it’s personal. We feel attached to each life we touch and help give them the tools necessary to be confident in the board room, sexy in the bedroom, and little by little their inner beauty shines through.

Nothing worth having is easy and my business is no exception to that. The challenges that we have faced are of course the financial risk of starting a business, the worry of failure, and the fear of betrayal by my inner ranks. Nathan had established a very large clientele and great reputation locally before he took the plunge to open his own salon. Thankfully that was the scariest part and he was brave enough to go for it. I soon followed him and together we were able to put in the time and effort every day to ensure our success. We did not allow our fears to dictate our decisions and we invested in ourselves; believing that our work ethic and talent would bring us to the top. We were not just business partners but married and it strengthened our bond and reliance on one another instead of others.

Unfortunately, we have had some hard lessons in trust. We do not give it freely, it must be earned and kept. In any business trusting who you work for and with is the hardest thing. We now have the dream team but it was hard getting to this point. Another lesson learned was to be true to myself. Early in my career many people told me to be professional and to dress, talk, and act a certain way. However, the best thing I ever did was be myself. It allowed my true personality to shine through and attracted the team and clientele we love. Going to work isn’t a chore when you enjoy not only what you do but who you get to work with daily. Which is why I absolutely love what I do. I will never stop learning and growing. You are either moving forward or backward, never stagnant.

I think it’s pretty incredible that my success has allowed me to create so many jobs and opportunities for others to also succeed. I view my success as my team and family success. I love the fact that I can help my family and community doing what I love. The most important advice I can give is you’re never fully dressed without great hair….and lashes, and nails, and diamonds. What can I say, I love it all!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First things first I view my home as my sanctuary. It truly is my favorite place to be. When I spend time with people I like to talk and play games. Being at home allows us to have better quality time. That being said, North Park Mall here we come! We love eating at Perry’s Steak House and then we would go to the Rose Room in Dallas to watch a drag show because those queens know how to have a good time! Everyone jokes that I have a zoo at my house, since I parent 5 dogs, 2 kittens, a macaw, and a salt water fish aquarium. When we want to see more exotic animals we go to the Fort Worth Zoo.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First I would not be where I am today without the love and support of my parents. They pushed me to pursue my passions and to be creative. They taught me how to work hard for the things I want in life and to have ambition to achieve my goals. They instilled a strong work ethic in me to succeed. After deciding to enter the beauty industry, I found my perfect match and soul mate in my husband and partner, Nathan Wayne. He is the most talented, hard worker I have ever met. I have always been attracted to others drive and ambition. He has the whole package and together we have not only grown as a couple but we have developed our own brand and family in the community. We think of our clients and staff as our salon family. Being one of ten kids in my family has taught me to value team work and remembering where I come from.
