We had the good fortune of connecting with Tay Ogundele-Ajibulu Event Planner & Decorator and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tay Ogundele-Ajibulu, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Before every event I have, I always say “God bless the works of my hands!” I’ve been saying this since my very first event where I was terribly nervous! Owning a service-based business, especially for important days; weddings, birthdays, etc, you want everything to be perfect! The truth is, on the day of an event something will most likely go wrong, whether big or small. My job as the planner or decorator is to make sure my client is satisfied with my services. Getting the job done without my bride and groom being stressed out or improvising on the decor when the venue has unexpected changes… that can be hectic! so I simply pray beforehand! Hasn’t failed me yet!

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m definitely proud to say that I am self-made. I literally started this business with nothing but an idea and no knowledge of how to actually make it profitable! I took what I knew about what made a successful business and started from there. I made my own website, business cards, and marketing material myself. I went to my favorite resources, Google and what I call YouTube University, haha! We have so much information at our fingertips, there is an answer for how to do everything! I learned how to improve my methods of decor this way as well. When I look at the first balloon garland I made in comparison to my recent work, even I see the growth! I have learned a few lessons along the way but I would have to say that how you market yourself is the biggest thing. Record everything! Take pictures as often as you can! The saying “pics or it didn’t happen” is true! You need people to see you. You and your product or service always need to be in their faces. Even if they don’t need you today when they do, hopefully, you come to mind! If you aren’t comfortable with social media, I would suggest you get acclimated, it’s not going anywhere!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This question is very funny to me. I am very new to the area so I have only been to a handful of places. So I’ll go off what I have seen so far. I have the best Super Target around the corner from me, haha. You can get lost in there and spend hours getting all kinds of things! I’ve also been to this restaurant, Concrete Cowboy with my husband and the food and vibes were nice! It has a cool sports vibe, with outdoor games and a rooftop with a view! Then I’d go to Pinstack because who doesn’t love bowling and bowling alley food?! They have great wings and a tower of onion rings you can order!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give a shoutout to my parents and my Aunt Wami! My story has been a long time coming. I grew up in a family with a hotel business back home in Nigeria and a restaurant/catering business here in the States so that has honestly given me years of local event planning experience. I have basically been doing this for free for as long as I can remember! Hospitality and entertainment are literally in my blood. My aunt is also an event planner and baker, I used to help her out when I was younger as well not knowing I would be running my own show later. I have always had a passion for helping plan parties for fun. Fast forward to present day I plan events of all kinds from birthdays, to proposals, to weddings and baby showers. I also provide day-of-coordination for weddings!
