We had the good fortune of connecting with John Keathley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
That’s interesting, because my personal definition has changed. When I was younger I believed success was being rich or wealthy. For the music industry I thought that meant like top 1%, huge stars, rich and famous, signed to major label, world tours, etc. After making a living in Nashville almost 10 years, my definition of success is definitely not that. Which is good! I have a more grounded definition now. I think success should be personally different for everyone. It’s more about are you happy doing what you’re doing? Are you making a comfortable living doing it? Are you growing and improving? If yes, then you are succeeding, Success!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a singer/songwriter/producer/performer in Nashville, TN. I write and produce songs. I also perform live music all the country.

The life of a Musician is a hard one. It takes a constant hustle and grind mindset. Also an entrepreneurial spirit where you have to wear many hats.

I just want people to support local and independent artists just like their local small businesses. We compete with big companies just like other businesses and we could use their support!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s quite a few in Nashville. Most people want to start at Broadway, which for locals is the last place you want to go. If I have to I’ll take them to Roberts Western World it’s a cool old school dive that’s different than the rest of downtown. Next East Nashville there’s a few cool spots over there get some rock n roll at 5 spot. Also got hit up Melrose Billiards off 8th ave also hit up the 8th Room if they got a show. Also Zannies is over there love stand up too. And maybe even Santa’s Pub for karaoke if the night goes that way?! There’s too many places to see in one trip…

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thanks, Karly Dirftwood, Josh Waters, Kevin Leach, and many others I’ve learned from and received support!
