We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica L. Purvis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica L., what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Habits that help me succeed are telling someone I trust my plans and allowing them to hold me accountable. I told my husband that I wanted to finish writing my children’s book and get it published. Not only did he hold me accountable and check in with my progress, but he put me in communication with different people I could speak with for help.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a children’s book author and small, online business owner. I am a follower of Jesus Christ and that’s what propels me in my goals. Each day, I am compelled to ask God what it is He would have me do and He continues to provide direction. For so long, I didn’t put myself out there because I was afraid but, once I decided to be obedient, the process took off.
I am most proud that I am living out what I have wanted to do since I was child. When I get videos and messages of children reading my short story or I see someone with my shirt on, it makes me feel so special. That’s a rewarding feeling, because it wasn’t easy with a husband, two small children and a full-time job to even start the process. I had to carve out time on my lunch break and write out design ideas to use when I had the time.
My husband supported me in leaving my career in education earlier this year and that’s when I was really able to buckle down and get some things accomplished. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to beat down the barriers that WILL arise and not make excuses.
The stories I write are centered around the family unit and togetherness. The designs I create are a reminder of who God says we are. This world is full of darkness and I just want to be a light that draws people to Him.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s a week-long trip? That’s a luxury. LOL. My best friend is in town, we are going to hang out at my house and cook breakfast with the family. Then we would get some sunlight and go to the park with the kids! Maybe it’s Sunday so we would go to church that afternoon. I go to Watermark South Dallas and we don’t start until 3pm so we have some time! After church, we stop at Terry Black’s BBQ. The rest of the week some girl time would be nice — we love lipstick, so we go to Myx Blend Bar in Dallas and then go to the spa!
We would definitely be rearranging furniture, eating some good seafood, going to see a movie, taking extended walks for some girl chats, and relaxing at home, because relaxation is not something that you get much of with small kids!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family gets the shout-out! My husband supports my goals and encourages me to stay the course and put one foot in front of the other every day. My two daughters inspired me to write this children’s book, because I want them to know they can accomplish their goals, no matter how small. Putting myself out there with my Etsy store, TwoPeasPersonals, and my book, “You Are Seen,” has been scary, but rewarding, because of them.
