We had the good fortune of connecting with Jermelyn Murdock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jermelyn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Was working in local Emergency Room when the pandemic started, realized I needed to help my family, school children, and as many people as possible in my home country of Philippines. They got locked down tight, with no way to make a living, and no help from the local government. I began cooking in my home for friends, co-workers, and other members of the community. To my surprise, our local community supported me in a big way, and I was able to send thousands of dollars of food and school supplies to the Philippines. As the pandemic slowed down I realized this was indeed my true passion, and discussed the idea of building a commercial kitchen with my husband. He agreed, and we began the very involved process of permits, inspections, buying equipment etc. Once again this wonderful little community we live in has supported me, and our little business is growing by the day!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe cooking and presentation of food is an artform, and I get so many compliments on our Kamayan or boodle feasts, which we sometimes create for a hundred people or more, and is presented on a bed of banana leaves, and each one is different and unique. I also do the inventory, advertising, meal prep, and all business aspects pretty much by myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
West Virginia, Almost Heaven, as the song goes is especially spectacular this time of year, I would take a guest on a train ride right out of our little town of Elkins, the three hour ride through the beautiful Appalachian mountains is a rainbow of colors with the fall foliage. West Virginia is the only state entirely situated in the Appalachian Mountains, with wonderful peaks and valleys to behold. A light dinner is served on the train. Tomorrow we may go to the beautiful Canaan Valley, including The Dolly Sods wilderness area, where you may climb rockey peaks, or take a horseback ride, after which we would visit the little town of Davis and enjoy some delightful Italian food at Sirianni’s Cafe.
A trip to West Virginia is not complete without a trip to Snowshoe Mountain ski resort, one of the premier snow skiing resorts in the eastern United States. Swiss village inspired, with beautiful slopes and lifts, and of course the fabulous Foxfire Grill which offers a variety of dining and wine options.
If white water rafting is something that tickles your fancy, the area around New River Gorge is the place we will go, a rugged whitewater river flowing from south to north is among the oldest rivers on the continent. One must also see the New River Gorge bridge, the longest steel span in the western hemisphere, and also the third highest bridge in the united states!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all my husband, who brought me to this country almost twenty years ago, and has supported me in every decision I have made since, and second to our wonderful small community that has welcomed the culture and food from a land far away!
