We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey Proctor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeffrey, how do you think about risk?
Starting your own business always comes with some uncertainty—you never really know how things will turn out. But there are ways to manage and reduce those risks. For me, having mentors who’ve already navigated the challenges of running their own counseling practices has been incredibly valuable. They’ve provided guidance that I couldn’t have figured out on my own. Additionally, being open to the idea that success might look different from what I initially imagined has helped me stay flexible. This openness has helped me avoid potential pitfalls that could have derailed my plans. While there will always be risks, having the right support and being willing to adapt can make a big difference.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is called Healing Harmony Counseling, based in Allen, TX. I specialize in working with people with ADHD, failure to launch third culture kids, and expats. These areas are deeply personal to me because I have ADHD myself and experienced living in a different country as a child. I understand these struggles firsthand and am proud to offer the kind of support I wish I’d had when I was younger.
I’ve reached this point with a lot of help from my wife and mentors. Their support has made this journey easier than I expected, mainly because I’ve been open to adapting my plans as needed. I’ve learned that people want to connect with my genuine self rather than just hear a clever marketing pitch. They need to see my real passion and commitment. That’s why I always aim to be authentic in all my interactions, both online and in person. I know what it’s like to face unique challenges that others might not understand, and I’m here to offer support in a way that truly resonates.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oooooh that is really hard. Well I love my area for food and there are lots of things to do around here it just depends on what you like. Some places that I like to eat are De Ra coffee and Nerdvana. De Ra is an Arabic coffee shop that makes amazing drinks, meals, and they have a bakery. The chef will make you any reasonably customed cake. Nerdvana is a restaurant that has a video game console at every table for you nerds out there. I would also recommend people to do sandbox VR in Dallas where you can have various VR adventures. Downtown Dallas and McKinney are really awesome places to walk around and the last place I would recommend is going to Adriática village in McKinney.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A huge reason for my success with my counseling practice is my wife. Starting a practice is tough, especially because therapists aren’t trained in business. Luckily, my wife has a background in marketing and sales, so she’s been a game-changer for me. She helped me see that I couldn’t just wait for clients to find me through insurance. Instead, she encouraged me to attend networking events, work on my website’s SEO, and take other proactive steps. I’m especially grateful for the networking events because they’ve helped me make friends who truly understand and support my journey in private practice.
