We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanette Greenwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeanette, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have been passionate about the arts since I was 4 years old. I have always used various forms of art, such as poetry, songwriting, storytelling, singing, and dancing, to express my feelings. I believe that the arts are the best way to convey emotions. With this in mind, I have decided to establish a nonprofit organization that mentors youth in economically disadvantaged communities. Coming from a family of five children, my parents did their best to provide us with extracurricular activities. Unfortunately, they were unable to afford to send me to college to pursue my dreams. As an adult, I have decided to return to my first love and provide opportunities to at-risk youth who may not otherwise have the chance to fulfill their potential goals.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an internationally award-winning filmmaker, I learned the art of film through trial and error, without attending film school. My first experience in film was a production I produced with a method I called a “Film Play,” combining film and theater. After the positive response to my first “Film Play,” I became interested in creating more films and later became Vice-President of an organization for women filmmakers. However, my experience as a black woman in the organization did not meet my expectations of how women should support each other.
This realization led me to create a safe space called Ladies in Film & Television, where women of all races and ages can create without fear of rejection or not meeting certain standards. Men are also welcome as supporters. Our major challenge is financing, and in 2020, we rebranded the organization but were affected by the pandemic, forcing us to adjust our programs and move to virtual platforms. One significant lesson learned is the missed opportunities for collaboration. We have now shifted our mindset and are focusing on improving collaboration as we move forward into 2024.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a big shoutout to my father, Walter B. Johnson, and my mother, Mattie Johnson (who has passed away), for their unwavering love and support while I was growing up. You both always allowed me to be myself (weird, LOL) and supported me in every play, talent show, or event. I also want to thank my husband, Johnnie Greenwood Jr., for his continued love and support. Even when I don’t listen, LOL, you stand with me and lift me up when I get discouraged. Thanks to my siblings, Tonza, Donna, Gwen, Kim, Howard, Quinn, and Lemond, for always supporting me and letting me sing from the top of my lungs. And a big thank you to all my volunteers and supporters from Ladies in Film & Television, formerly Headline Mentors & Performing Arts, for seeing the vision and joining forces with me to serve the community through the use of Performing Arts.
