We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarrett and Tana Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jarrett and Tana, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance was something we had to tackle early on in the development of our business. As a couple and as business partners, it’s easy to blur the line between work and everything else. At the early stages of our business, we noticed that there wasn’t a clear distinction between when we were working on the business–marketing, developing new ideas, juicing, etc–and when we were just living our lives, so we made a decision to designate time for everything. We blocked out time on our calendars for meetings, juicing, product creation, and recording and editing. This really allowed us to take off our business hats and put on our “just being Tana and Jarrett” hats more easily.

What should our readers know about your business?
There are so many great juice companies out there! What makes us different is that we specialize in CBD-infused juice, where we take fruits and vegetables that are high in anti-inflammatory properties and pair them with water-soluble CBD. We’re also proud that we’re a Black-owned business that strives to serve our local community members and our online friends through our YouTube channel.

This journey has not been easy. As we mentioned, work-life balance had to be addressed pretty early on, but there were other challenges as well. We had to figure out how to manage finances–do we get an accountant or not? We ended up investing in one just to be sure. Do we make our own labels or outsource? We ended up designing and printing our own. We had to understand business relationships–do we spread the net wide or choose our partners wisely? We have great business relationships with a select few partners.

These are the kinds of choices we’ve made and continue to make for our business. Deciding where to invest time and money to better the business is hard, and it’s especially difficult for two business owners who are new to entrepreneurship, but we’ve made it work.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ah! Dallas is an incredible place. We love to be outside, so we would recommend time for some great outdoor spots. Klyde Warren Park is great for relaxing when the temperatures are nice. Pre-Covid, they had an awesome yoga class on Saturday mornings. The Trinity Skyline trail is one we used to frequent with our dog, but we would definitely suggest the Cedar Ridge Preserve for a good hike. There are several trails and they aren’t too difficult. We’re big foodies! Bishop Arts has lots of great places to eat and drink–shoutout to our friends at Tribal Cafe, Vegan Food House, Casa del Vegano, The Salty Donut, Bishop Cider Co., Neighborhood Cellar, and The Weed Spot. There is so much history in Dallas (Dealey Plaza and the 6th Floor museum…)–but when we go on walks, we just stop and read plaques. There are tons!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We definitely want to give a special shoutout to our family and friends who supported and continue to support us through this business. Jarrett was inspired to create this business because of his dad and other family members who he wanted to see embrace healthier options. Tana’s mom planted a seed into the business through her own use of CBD and encouraged the integration of it into what was already a great product. And of course, all the family and friends who have supported by attending events and placing online orders are so special to us. We would not be here without any of them!
