We had the good fortune of connecting with Janeisha Mays and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janeisha, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance has been a huge factor for me especially being a dual career woman, I am a full time registered nurse and makeup artist. Starting out as a new nurse, I had no clue what work life balance was, it was hard work and no play. That attributed to my nursing burnout and my obligation to make sure I maintained a balance. There has to be a separation from work, social life, friends and family. Work life balance is the most important aspect in my career now. If there is no balance, it doesn’t make sense.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally? And was the road easy?
My artistry is a blend of soft glam and edge . My clients are hard working, professional women which I can completely relate to. What keeps me busy professionally is how I have been able to transition from a nursing professional to a makeup and lash professional. The road was not at all easy. One of my biggest challenges I had to overcome was learning to balance my makeup life with my nursing life. It was HARD!! Being an ER nurse at one of the busiest ER’s in the country then a travel nurse, it was hard to balance them both. I had to learn work life balance and how to say NO. I also had to think about my long term goals and decide what was going to be best for me!! Along the way, I had to learn to believe in myself and to give myself some grace. As an RN, I have mastered my field. Nursing comes second nature to me now, thus, I expected that to be the same way with makeup. I had to learn that I had to develop and master my skills as a nurse, I had to allow myself time to evolve as a makeup and lash artist. As a nurse, you are forever evolving with the advancement of medicine, I had to apply the same thought process to my artistry as well. Once I was able to get to that point, I was able to soar.
What would you like others to know about your business and brand?
I want the world to know that BrusHER Artistry aspires to broaden the conversation about beauty by showing up for those women who feel as though they cannot achieve their own personal beauty goals. On a daily basis, I encounter hardworking women who love makeup, love to get dolled up but feel defeated when it comes to their makeup products. BrusHER Artistry is that beacon of light to listen to the needs of the women in the community, guide them, support them, and show them that there are no rules to beauty. Oftentimes, the crippling thoughts of beauty are because no one has taken the time to listen to the consumers when they have specific questions. We intend to change that. Being an effective listener to our consumers and being empathetic to how they feel makes a difference to a person. Every person has a different need when it comes to beauty, we may not be able to fill the need of every person but we want to fill the need for as many as we can. The consumers are the ones who look to us for guidance and that’s exactly how we plan to lead them. The purpose is not about filling your books or selling out your websites, it’s about allowing your clients to have an outward and inward transformation!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I love to take my friends to Deep Ellum. The area has grown so much and there are so many things to do. Although I prefer to travel there during the day, there is always a place to hang out and have a good time. Lately, I have really enjoyed the different murals that I have found around the area. They serve as a great place for photoshoots!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I began my journey into makeup, I had no idea what I was really getting into or if it was something that I could do. There were so many people who couldn’t understand why I wanted to go from being a registered nurse to a makeup artist. Many people doubted me and others thought I was joking. I decided, I needed to talk with someone who I felt I could trust to keep it 100% honest with me. A makeup artist in Houston, who goes by @NikkiFacesmua on IG was the person who first believed in me. After I took my 1 on 1 with her, we had a candid conversation and the rest was history. She saw my passion, dedication and drive and it really gave me the clarity and relief that I was doing something else that I was passionate about. Her support and encouragement, still to this day, is something that I will always cherish!
