We had the good fortune of connecting with Iris Ramirez-Lugo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Iris, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have been in this industry for 20 years; I started in Puerto Rico because I was the one in the family in charge of planning all the activities and events. When my cousin decided to get married, he asked me to plan his wedding, and that is when I decided to study Wedding and Events planning and get certified and begin my business. When I moved from Puerto Rico to Texas in 2005, I only planned different school, community, church, and friends’ events. Because of those events I planned, my friends and clients referred me to other people, and they started advising me to expose my business to social media, do a website and expose what I love to do, which is Wedding and Event Planning.

I haven’t gotten yet to where I want to be, but I am working towards that, and with God’s help, I will reach my goals. It is not easy to start a business, but it is not impossible. What has helped me build my business a little bit easier is listening to others in this same industry advice about their mistakes and errors. Also, learning and learning more of this industry, being humble, and not being afraid to ask when you don’t know. I feel that my most formidable challenge has been getting clients to know my business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week-long trip sounds very long, but if it were a long weekend, I would take my friend to the following places: Itinerary Thursday: • Pick up my friend at the airport • Eat at Hopdoddy Burger Bar in Dallas (Best Burger joint) Friday: • Eat Breakfast at Ellen’s (Stylish Southern all-day Breakfast, lunch & dinner) • Visit the Six Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza • Dallas Museum of Art • Dallas World Aquarium • Have Lunch at The Woolworth (menu of shared plates & entrees) • Visit Downtown Dallas in Scooter bikes • Travel to Austin • Eat at Wu Chow (great dumplings) • Listen to live music at Antone’s Saturday: • Eat Breakfast at 1886 Café and Bakery (Baked goods, all-day American fare in a Victorian tearoom-style) • Visit the State Capitol • Visit the Paramount Theater • Visit the University of Texas • Visit the Austin iconic murals • Eat Lunch at Jo’s Coffee • Visit the Texas Governor’s Mansion • Drive to Hill Country Fredericksburg • Eat at Mamacita’s Restaurant Sunday: • Eat Breakfast at Sunset Grill (New American bistro serving thoughtfully sourced eats) • Visit Enchanted Rock • Visit Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park • Go-Wine tasting • Visit Downtown Fredericksburg for shopping • Eat at Altdorf Restaurant & Biergarten • Drive back to Dallas Monday: • Eat Breakfast at Egg and I • Visit Downtown Denton • Visit UNT • Eat Lunch at Crackle Barrel • Travel to the Airport
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes out to my family that has been my support at all times; my daughters have been part of my events, and know my oldest daughter is part of my vendor’s list because she is a Hair and Makeup Stylist. I also give a shoutout to my husband and my mom that have always believed in my talents. Also, I want to give thanks to God because he has given me grace and has blessed me at all times; without him, I wouldn’t have anything, Psalm 57:2 I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.
