We had the good fortune of connecting with Holly Bennett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Holly, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I have always felt like work life balance was incredibly important. My goal is to foster an environment where employees feel free to complete their work as time permits. I believe that as long as everyone knows what the expectations are for completing their daily work they should be allowed the freedom to attend to the needs of their family. We used to allow several days a week at home based on work performance, but with COVID everyone was transitioned home and I have closed our local office. It saves me time and stress as a business owner and has given employees even greater flexibility. It has been a huge win win. Treating employees as people with personal needs and not just workers has resulted in our company having zero turnover for several years.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel like my whole life prepared me to be a small business owner. College didn’t teach me a single thing. That doesn’t mean I don’t like to learn. I learn from life experiences and seeing a need. I will seek out knowledge and educate myself on anything that interest me. My husband likes to say I am always chasing a rainbow.
I got my first job in HR by applying at the call center I was working at. I eventually obtained my SPHR certification and worked my way up in Human Resources at several companies. My theory on working was to always try to incorporate a skill or interest that I had and give a company more than they were paying for. I would try to incorporate things that I was passionate about from events, recognition, working on computer hardware, even dabbling in coding. I would try to make my role into more than I was hired for.
All of my skills and interests that I learned over time made me the perfect one-woman resource for any small business owner. I became the right-hand person for the president of our company, and when the time was right for her to retire I was the only logical choice to purchase the business.
Now that I own a company I am the President, HR, Accountant, Purchasing, Events Coordinator, Computer and Networking technician and everything in between. Being a small business owner has brought together all of my knowledge, interests and skills. It keeps life interesting and my mind busy, which i absolutely love.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have always taken visitors to downtown Dallas – the JFK memorial, segway tours, and up Reunion tower. I live in West Plano now, so Legacy West is a personal fave. If someone is visiting for a few days, I am a lover of Fossil Rim. It’s a bit of a drive, but so amazing for kids and adults alike, so I try to go at least once a year.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have an amazing team. From the Insurance Reviewers to the Team Leads – they all know what is expected and make things run so smoothly for me.
