We had the good fortune of connecting with Hailey Whitley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hailey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I always knew I wanted to make art a staple in my life. Since I was little, I was drawn to painting and design. Baking dog treats for my fur baby sparked my love for decorating baked goods. From there my skill set grew to sugar cookies and then to cupcakes. Knowing my day to day involves an artistic outlet brings me a lot of happiness. I can’t imagine myself in a non-creative career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My artistic outlet is decorating and designing sugar cookies and cupcakes. I actually hand paint some of the cookies! I think what sets us apart from other bakers is our ‘designer’ cupcakes. I literally design each element of our cupcakes, with the flavor profile and aesthetics as the top priority. Word of mouth and social media exposure got The Cake Shoppe off the ground. My business partner and investor, Melony, is actually a former client! There has been a lot of obstacles along the way, but overall starting and running my business has been a pleasant experience. I just turned 22 and honestly, I’m dead tired at the end of the day. But I wouldn’t have it any other way! I’m still learning how to run a brick-and-mortar location, manage employees, and reach our maximum marketing potential. My main thing I’d like people to know about The Cake Shoppe is every purchase you make with us supports my dream, my art, and my personal future.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I was born and raised in HEB which is right between Dallas and Fort Worth. So I’ve spent time in both, and love both equally. I think Terry Black’s BBQ in Deep Ellum would be my top recommendation food wise. Magnolia Street in Fort Worth has the cutest patio bars. Emporium pies is a must! Over by my bakery, in Bedford, Ice House, Main St BBQ, and Yichiban Buffet are my faves. Im a little bit of a foodie!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my success so far to my business partner, Melony Cartwright, for believing in my edible art enough to start this bakery with me. I’d also like to give a special shoutout to my grandparents, Dave and Debi Lane, for all the hard work they’ve put into not just the bakery, but also my future. They are my number one fans and my support system.
