We had the good fortune of connecting with Hailei Beckwith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hailei, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Being an entrepreneur is in my blood. My great-great-great-grandparents were the Owners of a grocery store, my grandfather is the Founder/Owner of Golden Gate Funeral Home and my Father is the CEO/Owner. Inspired by them, I wanted to keep the legacy going and have generational wealth for future generations to come. I love candles and they are my go-to when I need to relax, study, or Saturday morning cleaning days. I was always purchasing store candles, but the scents never really lasted long and they would always burn too fast. I also needed candles that did not contain beeswax since I am highly allergic to bees. After much research and with the help of my Mom, I decided to start my own candle business. I knew that I wanted my candles to be as natural as possible, eco-friendly, slow-burning, smell amazing, and affordable. I originally started with soy wax candles and now I use my own proprietary blend of soy and coconut wax. I have expanded my brand to include wax melts, room sprays, aroma/home burning oils, and car reed diffusers. I have offer virtual and in-person candle-making workshops.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The beauty of being a creative candle artist is that my potential is infinite. Most of my candles are custom blended scents that I develop based on scent notes and my current mood. A single scent can produce numerous and very meaningful memories, create ambience and release positive vibes. Certain scents may calm and relax you after a hard day of work while others can give you the energy and stamina you need to get through the day. I want to present a Southern sensation to my brand, so I utilize mason jar vessels for mostly all of my scents. The mason jars are reminiscent of canning fruit preserves with my late Great-Grandmother. The vessels can also be up cycled and used for planting flowers and various other things around your home. I am someone who is very passionate about helping others and giving back to my community so with a portion of my proceeds, I give back to the community. Helping others has always been my passion and my business allows me to do what is most important to me. To whom much is given, much is required.
Hard work, dedication, a supportive family and loyal customers have gotten me to where I am today. It hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had to balance school, a pandemic, virtual school and just being a teenager. I have a product that most people want to smell before purchasing so vending markets are always big for me. When The Pandemic hit, I had to change the way I did things. We hired a creative writer to come up with more ways to describe our candles and even started a $5 Friday promotion. Customers love that and it gives them an opportunity to stay lit with LoveLit because your candle isn’t lit, unless its LoveLit.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would have to start our day with brunch at Yolk or Snooze an AM Eatery! We’d visit the African American Museum and then head over to the Dallas Cowboy Stadium for a tour. Our next stop would be Kitchen + Cocktails and then head to an amazing performance at the Dallas Black Dance Theater.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am thankful to God for all he has blessed me with. I believe that to whom much is given, much is required. I would definitely have to shout out my amazing Mom! She has been my biggest supporter and motivator! I would not be where I am today without her. I’m also thankful for my Dad, my bonus parents, and my grandparents; especially my MeMe. I can‘t forget my customers. My business is successful because of them. LoveLit Candles Co. would not exist without their loyal support and for that, I AM GRATEFUL!
