We had the good fortune of connecting with Grace & Jocelyne Galaviz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Grace & Jocelyne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our small business, Nerdy Tails, began to form during the pandemic. As we were trying to be safe during this time and had a lot of free times, we began to explore different hobbies which included sewing and our dogs.
Grace and I always had a soft spot for animals, growing up with dogs and adopting/rescuing 3 of our own. As we looked for accessories for our pups, we found that the choices for our favorite fandoms were limited. So, Grace took out her sewing machine and got to work.
After a few trial and errors, and a high attention to detail, a final design that was both beautiful, durable, and practical was ready! Add that in with our trendy prints and personal touches, we had a product ready to be shared with other pawrents!
We love hearing the positive feedback regarding the different fandoms and available styles and our customer’s seem to be pleasantly surprised at the various options that we carry!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Being first generation Latinx, women owned, and LGBTQA+ owned, we had the odds stacked against us. However, the feedback we received on our product and the love that has been shown to us, has pushed us to work as hard as possible and motivated to strive for success. Not only do we want to succeed but we would like to use this success to give back to our community and the animals we love so much.
Along the way we have faced challenges in design – having to adjust our product to improve it based on both trial and error and customer feedback. We feel that it is important to be able to evolve and change so that you are constantly bettering both your product and your brand.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being that we are not Texas natives, we of course have to hit all of Texas classics – Whataburger, HEB, Buc-ee’s, the State Fair, BBQ, and so on!
We’re huge fans of trying and experiencing new foods, especially Asian foods. We love to support small and family owned business so the Carrolton area has a great selection of hidden gems!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Nerdy Tails would never exist if it wasn’t for the amazing support of our closest family, friends, and neighbors. Our community has helped us manifest this business into existence and is why we want to give right back to the same community and organizations dear to us.
We want to thank the wonderful rescue, I am Dog Rescue, located out of Aubrey, Texas. The work they do to help out the community and advocate for the pups who need it the most is immeasurable. We are happy to report that as of today, Eevee has been adopted and is doing well in her new home! We look forward to fostering again in the near future with I am Dog Rescue.
