We had the good fortune of connecting with Gloria Sampson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gloria, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
This for me is so hard because sometimes with risks they cost you time and money, neither of which are easy to come by at the beginning stages of a small business. I think taking some risks are good. You never know sometimes what new doors can open for you. I always did my research first and made sure the companies that reached out were legit. There are so many fraudulent businesses out there. You have to be careful.
Also, I was not afraid to say no. Sometimes they will even harass you because for the legit companies you have to keep in mind that they need money to run a business as well. Even still I did not allow them to bully me. Not all “publicity” is good. I made sure to stick to the true meaning of why I started and what am I trying to accomplish.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So in my “9 to 5,” I work in finance, specifically retirement accounts which is a new world from where I used to be in healthcare. I worked in healthcare for 12 years. I got into finance kind of in a weird way. I was studying to get my life, health, and accident license. I learned the basics of becoming a broker. I became intrigued. Here I am today.
With all that learning to make myself better professionally and moving jobs, my small business, at times, was placed on the back burner, and even though I will love the day when I can perhaps have my business as my full-time job, I’m not there yet.
You have good days and bad; I could not put my all into my business. I may get a bad review or a return, even though those things happen. When you have a small business, it makes things worse because I will start to think maybe I am not cut out for this. I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. I should give up. Especially when I have to work on my marketing and I may not get traction to my site. I remind myself, though, that anything worth having is not easy.
I want everyone to know that Gloria’s Little Things is always looking for more ways to improve and grow. To be more innovative and build that community of style that represents the individual and their creativity. To stay true to themselves no matter what people think. The pure essence of staying true to you always.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I’m a foodie. I will take them to Dave’s Chicken if they are craving a good spicy chicken. We can get Ramen from Ninja Ramen or some fish from The Catch. We can go to Gloria’s and sit at the bar and get some Mexican or Uncle Julios for some good tex-mex steak and drinks. 54th Street for a laid-back atmosphere. We can go to Studio Movie Grill to watch some movies. Go to the Highlands or the Parks Mall to shop. Go to Lake Arlington and cruise on a boat or have some adventure on a jet ski. Go to River Legacy for a good biking trail ride. Go to a game at the Texas Rangers or watch some Football at the stadium. Go to six flags for a thrill ride, or go to a bowling alley for the ones, not into that much thrill.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes of course. Other than my family and friends. I have Instagram friends that have stuck with Gloria’s Little Things from the very beginning. When I was still truly trying to figure things out. These individuals come from all walks of life and are all over. Even some in the UK. I’ve been grateful for their opinion and just encouragement and sticking around for the good and the bad.
