We had the good fortune of connecting with Fredricka Fonta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fredricka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I recognized that when you work for someone else you are putting your freedom and livelihood in their hands. I had endured many ups and downs working for others and I was never fully appreciated for what I brought to the table. I saw the jealously that plagued the women I worked with and it led them to try and harm me instead of us working together to build something, so I wanted to start a brand that celebrated other strong women.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is a natural wellness store & boutique. What sets Glamorous Hippe apart is the focus on spreading love and light through our everyday lives. Each item for sale is original art made by me and all-natural. The pieces are about empowerment and finding your true state of being. I love the fact that every item that is sent out, must pass through my hands. because I pray over each order and bless the people receiving them. I believe that who we come in contact with impacts us, and I want to impact my customers in their spirit and in a positive way. I started the journey of herbal medicine and complete healing when I was 17 and now at age 42, it is still my passion. My love for wanting to see others happy and healthy is what has gotten me to where I am today in business and my life. The brand has become a place for sisterhood and brotherhood, it is a community of good vibes. My poetry, music, art, and podcast are shared and I love knowing that love is reaching the world. I love when someone says, my song, poetry, meditation class, herbal teas, or anything I put out into the world made them feel powerful. It is the best reward ever!! Getting to this place wasn’t always easy, but life isn’t about being easy. To me, the things we go through in life are to reveal our true selves to us. If you are never challenged then you will never know what you have inside. I know people say this all the time, but I wouldn’t trade any part of my life because it made me. When I am going through challenges, I remind myself constantly that “this too shall pass”. I try to focus on moving forward in an effort to help it pass faster because when we get stuck in the feelings of what is happening, it makes it harder to endure. I have been a single mother for 16 years and it is important that I teach my son how to stand in faith. He watches me run the company and run our lives, and I feel good knowing that he will have what it takes to stand in power in his life. If I could tell you one thing it would be to honor your voice and your life. Don’t try to be like anyone else, don’t pick yourself apart. Imagine who you want to be, and don’t be afraid to go through what it takes to become what you imagine.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots in the city is The Dallas Museum of Art. The statuesque bone-colored walls have a power about them that just calms me down. My mind feels open and many great ideas start to flow. I have more favorite “stomping grounds” than places and one of my favorites is Uptown. The energy is good and I always feel inspired there, especially at night. Uptown has some great spots to just sit and enjoy patio dining while you have a drink or just people watch. I also love White Rock Lake in the mornings, very peaceful and filled with nature.

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
There are so many people that have taught me life lessons and helped shape me, especially in my family. First, my mother Felecha, who is a fierce woman of God and gave me the gift of life. She showed me the power of real love and was the first woman that I ever saw run her own business and be a mother. She never missed a beat and did it all while being glamorous and chic. My father is a pioneer in the business and tech world and as a young African American man was working for IBM, which was a huge deal for that time. My parents through raising my sister and I really showed me what was possible, they introduced us to culture, art, and the best of life. They also introduced us to God, who is my next shout-out. There are so many things in my life that I know would have killed me and broken my spirit had it not been for God’s grace. God is the source of all that I am, even the people that have been in my life, were hand-picked by Him to get me to where I am today. Next, My uncle Chauncey gave me so many tools for life and he always believed in me. I believe had we been able to see his heart, it would have looked like gold. He is the true definition of a star. My grandma Faye, who was a soldier on the front lines of life, was always there to say just the right thing to push me forward. Finally, my son Dakohta, this gift from God has been and will always be the best thing I have ever been blessed to experience. He is proof that God hears prayers and I have never loved anyone so much. I really love who he is as a person and we have the best time ever.
