We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Skillen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Prior to starting content4good, I was running a mental health startup … through a global pandemic. As people reached out for support with increasing cases of anxiety, depression, substance abuse and more, I started thinking about how changing our workplaces could have a positive impact on people, the environment and more.

Toxic leadership and the unhealthy work environments it can create has a ripple effect. We get bullied, undermined, burnout and more at work and then carry that home with us. It impacts health, relationships and our ability to get involved in issues we care about. I believe that better workplaces inspire healthier, happier team members, which can then improve our physical and mental health, our relationships with our partners, kids, friends and leave us with enough energy in our tank to participate in creating positive societal change as engaged citizens.

I created content4good to help leaders and team members embrace empathic leadership, psychological safety, equity and inclusion and more. I’m definitely an idealist, but I’m a rational one.

What should our readers know about your business?
Humour is one of the key elements that sets me and my company apart. Laughing together creates connection and releases all kinds of amazing brain chemicals. All too often we’re too serious at work and it doesn’t need to be that way. I cover a lot of serious topics in my presentations, change management strategies, writing and more. I find that the #1 comment I get is about the energy and fun I bring to these tough issues, being relatable and real. The more we see one another as human beings, rather than workbots, the more we can dig into the hard stuff and find ways to make things better together.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Nicole Smith – the Founder/CEO of Flytographer – is an extraordinary entrepreneur who inspired me to take the leap and go solo. Her travel photography company was killing it and then suddenly covid hit and her bookings went to zero. She is the most resilient person I know, pivoting through the height of the pandemic to keep Flytographer alive. It worked, and they’re back to being a powerful success story. Her belief in me, her expertise and her excitement were exactly what I needed to believe in myself.
