We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My process behind starting ELM Interiors began the moment I decided to take a leap of faith to do something I am passionate about. I wanted to share my creativity in a way that created a space for affordable interior styling services that could be accessible completely online, assisting with decor ideas, concept consultations, or a complete e-design. I found my niche within this industry that I believe is just the beginning of this exciting journey. Interior design has always been my first love. My passion to help people and my passion for design are the reasons why I created ELM Interiors.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ELM Interiors offers virtual interior styling services. I believe what sets ELM Interiors apart from others is whether you need assistance with decor ideas, a concept consultation, or a complete e-design of your space, all interior styling services are done entirely online! It’s a convenient way for my clients to work with me even if they live in another state. Offering digitally designed custom mood boards, concepts, with a list of the decor items to purchase for your space that you can DIY. ELM Interiors is an easy and affordable way to work with an interior stylist to transform your space. I am most excited about the expansion of my business services coming later this year!

Where I am today vs. where I started was not easy. In fact, it was more challenging than I thought! I started off with great ideas and a vision of exactly what that looks like, but my initial plan didn’t turn out exactly how I envisioned and that’s okay! That challenged me to learn to adjust or pivot when necessary. The key to overcoming those challenges of starting my own business, all together, is consistency. I’ve learned that it’s okay to pause, regroup but no matter what, I promised myself to keep creating and keep putting my work out there.

What I would want the world to know about my story is, I came back to my dream! I studied Architecture and Interior Design in College. My College professor asked me, “What is your dream?” I replied: “To be an interior designer on HGTV!” but then, life had a change of course for me. I have always had an eye for design, decor, and will walk into a space and re-design the area in my mind, sounds crazy, I know, but if you are creative, you get it! I have always had family, friends and some strangers tell me I have a talent in design, but I guess my original dream faded when I didn’t get accepted into the final semesters of the Architecture program. I never took the leap of faith, until now. My passion has never left, my love for design has never left, it’s all in divine timing. My passion to help people and my passion for design are the reasons why I created ELM Interiors, it is my belief that everything comes around, full circle.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

3 things instantly come to mind: Happy Hour, Brunch, Music!

My best friends and I love to get together for the Happy Hour Hike at Legacy West. It’s so fun, it’s about $20 and you get a souvenir glass and visit each of the participating shops and eateries to try their signature cocktails or wine.

We love live music on Sunday Funday at Lava Cantina in The Colony, they have a buffet and amphitheater for their live music/cover band and or music artist, it’s so much fun!

BRUNCH is a must! When my best friends are in town we love to dress up and go eat. Some of the best brunch spots we’ve tried in the Dallas area are YardBird, Yolk, and Pangea Restaurant & Bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my GIRL TRIBE! Those who have been super encouraging and supportive throughout my journey. They have helped me believe in myself more than I could have imagined. They are the people that are always positive, supporting, contributing, uplifting, pushing me to just DO IT. My real-life girl tribe is absolutely the best and always have shown so much love in all aspects of my life. I probably would not have taken this leap towards success if it wasn’t for the support of these ladies, I cannot thank ya’ll enough!
