We had the good fortune of connecting with emily davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi emily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
after college, my husband and i moved around a bit for his job. we spent time in both houston and st louis. while there, i had the opportunity to work for an amazing designer (amie corley interiors). she taught me the ropes and opened my eyes to the world of residential design. when we moved back to tulsa, i thought i’d throw my hat in the ring. 10 years later i can fully say that leap of faith has paid off!
What should our readers know about your business?
i am the sole proprieter of a residential interior design firm in tulsa, oklahoma and i LOVE my job. i love the personal nature of client work, i love the creativity and i love the flexibility. while the path has definitely not been easy, it has been worth it. it is clear that i feel entirely passionate about what i do, or else i wouldn’t do it. work hours are 8-3. in the afternoons and evenings, i am with my family. but when the kids go to bed, it is back to work. i’m on my computer more evenings than i am not. and while this schedule wouldn’t work for everyone, it allows me to ‘have it all’ …. except for my sanity 🙂
building this business from the ground up has been one of the most fulfilling things about my life and something i am hugely proud of. the fact that people trust me in their homes, families and finances will never be lost on me. i am so grateful!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
tulsa is the best – truly a hidden gem. but don’t tell anyone – ha! one of the best things about this fair city is that the secret isn’t ‘out’ yet. it is so liveable here and we truly have the most gorgeous homes.
a visit to philbrook museum should be on anyone’s list. the museum itself is amazing, but what takes it to the next level is the programming and the grounds. there is always an awesome event or activity that showcases the amazing building and gardens.
grabbing lunch at utica square (stonehorse or bar serra) is always great. then take a stroll through the historic neighborhoods attached to it and ogle the beautiful homes!
if you are visiting during tulip season, the botanic gardens are visually spectacular! and if kids are involved, the gathering place is a must. we are so lucky to have that amazing resource.
for home decor shopping, pop into TA Lorton, Shop Sasha and Embellishments. my favorite stretch for antique shops is along main street in jenks (a tulsa suburb).
for dinner, oren is the best meal in town. especially if you can get it on a patio evening. i have never had an item from their menu that couldn’t be classified as truly delicious!
random, awesome things:
ediblend (smoothie cafe) – i grab lunch here pretty much every day during the week
shades of brown – my favorite latte in town
magic city books – the most adorable gem of a bookstore
turkey mountain – boasted as ‘urban wilderness’ it is a protected nature area with hiking trails less than 15 minutes from downtown
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
amie corley, amie corley interiors. i had no formal interior design training when she hired me, but she took a chance on me. and i will be forever grateful!
valerie dittner, wardrobe consultant. she is my bestie and the person i always turn to for business advice in the ‘what would you do’ situations that inevitably arise.
kacey gilpin, photographer. another bestie who has been intimately connected with the success of my business. i can confidently say if i didn’t have her on my team, i wouldn’t be where i am today.
