We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr Omomengbe Oni and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr Omomengbe, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember, since I was a little girl. However, my life’s journey took a different path, working in oil and gas, starting a family and I thought that dream was dead. After many years working in the oil and gas sector, that desire never really died but I assumed it was just a pipe dream and if I did anything healthcare related, that would be enough to satisfy that itch. I trained as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist and MRI Technologist. I really loved my job and my favorite part was the interaction with patients, but not knowing how they progressed on their health journey after I performed scans on them always nagged at me. Thus began my journey back to medical school.
A lifelong passion for healthcare inspired me to establish a practice that offers personalized care rooted in compassion and expertise.

When I started my career in the fee for service world, the constraints of a busy schedule and endless insurance roadblocks often left me feeling frustrated and drained. I felt like there was not enough time to really pour into my patients and I was taking time to do it, but then left burning the candle at both ends to still complete all the paperwork and insurance requirements.

This ignited the desire in me to start Zelos Direct Primary Care, so I can practice medicine as I had always envisioned it. Giving my patients quality care and time without hurry and hassle.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My practice model is direct primary care which removes the insurance middleman, guaranteeing more access to patients. It is based on a membership model where patients pay an affordable monthly fee for unlimited access to the same physician everytime who knows them intricately and their medical history. The idea is to keep you well so that barring all unforeseen circumstances, you don’t need the hospital.

It was not easy taking the leap to leave paid employment to pursue this dream, and entrepreneurship is not something I had done before but it has been well worth it. I and my patients are happier, I have better work life synergy and am able to pour from a fuller cup.

My brand is built on the premise of delivering exceptional compassionate care to my patients that is driven by zeal and passion. My practice name ZELOS, which is Greek for zeal is taken from Isaiah 9 verse 6 in the Bible which says the zeal of the Lord will perform it. My faith is a huge grounding force for me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Recently moved to the DFW area from Illinois so I am still trying to explore the city and know the best places to hang out. I’m taking suggestions for sure!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my husband Abiodun who never stopped believing in me and pushing me to soar. To my children who were with me throughout the whole process and always understood when mum had to study or when she was cranky, who moved with me throughout the journey of clinical rotations and residency and never complained. Shoutout to my dear friend, Dr Ola Kolawole who nudged me to fulfill our collective childhood dream and secured a tuition scholarship for me even without my knowledge. To so many other friends and mentors too numerous to mention who gave sound advice, cheered me on on days when it seemed quitting would be easier. And ultimately shoutout to God who gave me the strength and made it all possible!!
