We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Joy Brown-Bolden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Joy, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea behind my business was based on a personal need. I had struggled to find a motherhood community led by a professional woman of color. When the pandemic hit, I was a new mama and desperately needed to get into community with like-minded mamas. After sharing about my need on social media, I learned that so many other mamas had the same problem. At the time, there were many social media parent influencers, but few were trained experts. Being that I had the professional training and expertise to serve parents, I created the My Modern Parenting and the Modern Mama Squad to meet a need for myself and others.
What should our readers know about your business?
The mission of My Modern Parenting is to provide parents AND early childhood professionals from all backgrounds with support, through coaching and consulting, to navigate the first five years and cultivate children who are confident, culturally aware, emotionally intelligent and academically successful.
We provide professional development and classroom coaching to early childhood teachers and administrators serving children, ages (Birth-5 years). We ensure that every resource is inclusive of the Black and Brown experience, and we acknowledge how cultural background plays a major role in teaching methods.
Our most in demand parenting resource, Modern Mama Squad, is a membership-based community for mamas, with children between the ages of birth-5, committed to parenting with confidence, peace and respect. Members gain exclusive access to support and resources that are evidence-based and realistic for busy lifestyles.
Modern Mama Squad is a combination of community and professional support at a reasonable price, making it the ultimate resource for modern mamas.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a major foodie. I love taking people to good eateries, and LA has a lot to offer. I would recommend hitting up taco trucks in East LA after hours. The best taco trucks come out after dark! If you can’t make it after dark, definitely check out Birria Los Socios for some AMAZING birria tacos. If you’re near LA Live, try out the Fixins Soul Kitchen. Little Tonis in North Hollywood has the best pizza in LA. Also hit up Simply Wholesome, The Grove, and Griffith Observatory.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely want to shout out the wonderful team at the Jai Institute for Parenting. I received my parenting coach certification from this institution, and I will forever cherish what I learned and experienced while there. As a child development professor, I was confident in my ability to teach parents about their child’s development. However, I lacked confidence in serving as a guide and diving deep with parents. Training with the Jai Institute equipped me with what I needed and more. As a result, I have helped so many individuals become the parent of their dreams.
